And when I say every party, I mean it. People didn't directly vote for hate last night. The Conservative vote is also down. NDP voters stayed home in droves. People failed to understand a party is more than its leader and Eby was already out the door before he resigned. And we will suffer

We’re going to be here, and in the Legislature, fighting for affordability, a livable future, better care systems, protecting our 2SLGBTQI+ friends, labour rights, Indigenous sovereignty, and help for every day British Columbians just trying to get by.

Already a million great elxn takes. I'm remembering this post I made 2 yrs ago (about the Fed NDP, but Prov quickly did the same). I could be wrong 🤷‍♂️ But the NDP capitulating on so many progressive issues seems like it gained them ~0 conservative votes, while losing them thousands of supporters.

Lying news media Eby’s election gamble backfired *spectacularly*

James Ball@jamesrball.com

1. Call an early election because the opposition is in chaos 2. Early election causes opposition to stop being in chaos 3. Polls move against you 4. Oh. *Really* against you (Conservatives will be majority government). 5. Resign

Some other times snap elections have backfired in Canadian history: 1969 (Manitoba): Called two years early. Governing PCs lost to NDP. 1990 (Ontario): Called two years early. Governing Liberals lost to NDP. 2015 (Alberta): Called one year early. Governing PCs lost to NDP.

Looking like record-low voter turnout in B.C. tonight. With 97.3% of ballot boxes reporting, Elections B.C. reports a turnout of 46.63%.

BREAKING: CBC has projected a BC Conservatives MAJORITY GOVERNMENT in British Columbia. A party in big disarray when the election was called, with an INTERIM leader nobody knew. LESSON: DON’T CALL AN EARLY ELECTION, ESPECIALLY OVERLAPPING WITH A MUNICIPAL ELECTION, WHEN YOUR LEADER IS UNPOPULAR.

Eby lost this election through multiple egregious mistakes, arrogance & lack of political skill. But we also need to see his catastrophic loss as proof of what happens when "progressives" swing to the right. Eby is not the first centrist to be taught this lesson. Can the NDP learn? #bcpoli

Obama: "That well-known evil empire Canada. That historical adversary of ours. Canada! *laughs* It's your neighbor. It's a few minutes' drive over the bridge! These are the people who gave us Martin Short and maple syrup. They are the nicest people! And someone we've gotten them so mad."

And, friends. No matter what he and his apologists tell you, if the NDP loses government, it will be entirely his fault. Many in his caucus warned him. His data warned him. But with so much dissatisfaction with him from within, he was unlikely to still be leader by the fixed election date.

In asking people not to elect Greens, Eby is hoping to remove the only incentive he has to stop moving to the right. History teaches us centrism opens the door to fascism. The systemic change we desperately need will never come while leaders hold voters hostage under first past the post.

So many major changes to the political landscape across BC. We are so lucky to have the right to choose, that we have democracy. So many others around the world don’t. It should never be taken for granted.

In the Vancouver election, many thought Pete Fry and the Greens couldn’t beat Sim’s money advantage. “Turns out, they could—with a little help from their friends.” THREE progressive parties worked together proposing a coalition council, didn’t split the vote, and won instead of beating each other.

cbc.caANALYSIS | 4 reasons why Pete Fry is the new mayor of Vancouver — and 1 reason Ken Sim lost | CBC NewsIn a province where incumbent mayors seeking re-election win approximately 80 per cent of the time, why did Ken Sim lose in Vancouver? Here are a few reasons, based on reporting before and during the ...

Thinking a lot about Ken Sim drinking beer with Whitecaps fans in Miami last December talking all confidently about saving the Whitecaps…then did basically nothing. Also about his MOU with the Canucks at Britannia that was roundly dumped on by the community and now seems pretty dead in the water.

It is weird how many people are like “oh man, an icon is gone” and more tellingly saying “I’m never calling the new bridge stal̕əw̓asəm” is such a weird hill to die on. The bridge was scary and crumbling. The new bridge is going to be a life saver. The Pattullo was obsolete AF. Good riddance.

For posterity for future Vancouverites: The Pattullo Bridge between New Westminster and Surrey was a shitty bridge. Beyond being “orange and cool looking”, it was narrow, didn’t have a hard divider between oncoming traffic, and was well used beyond its original design.
