The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

It should be as simple as that Suddenly the "rogue agents" would lose quite a lot of their "agency" And we'd finally have some of that word all AI companies dread: ACCOUNTABILITY

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

People abroad don't understand the level of interference Meta & bots had in these elections. 5 days before the election a far-right politician posted a fake news video that got 157 MILLION views on Instagram in 24hs. For reference, GTA 6's reveal trailer got 90 million views on YouTube in 24hs.

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

Go see Wildwood. Seriously, don’t wait—go see Wildwood. What a piece of art. The love for the manual craft, for story that doesn’t hold back, for filmmaking that is not here to answer to stockholders, it weaves all through it. Incredible stuff.

More shocking displays by Bolsonaro supporters in the last 24 hours: voters wearing T-shirts that say “long live fascism,” doing a Nazi salute when entering the polls, and a white man walking a Black man on a chain at a pro-Bolsonaro gathering in Rio de Janeiro.

The elite hate us being educated, us educating you, you educating each other, and you having time to do this. Stop granting that it's the university that is elitist inherently: it's been made that way for a reason. Some more points below also on the marriages between patriarchy, AI, capitalism...

“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men. We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”

Outside of tech there has been no financial payoff to US companies for using AI, now viewed as a margin-hurting cost center, as VC-backed firms burn more tokens (Torsten Slok/Apollo Global Management) Main Link | Techmeme Permalink

We watched Wildwood with the kids today and it was GREAT! Definitely too many violent/scary scenes for 3yo and 8yo (I incorrectly assumed a lower rating, should've checked...), but in the end they were applauding it Top-tier stop motion

Tech billionaires and their fascists puppets want you to get angry about trans women replacing women in sports while their tech slowly but surely replaces you in absolutely everything.

like how do you even run a studio where everyone working there has all the reason to think 1. their days with the company are numbered, 2. their performance has nothing to do with outcomes, 3. the thing they're working on won't ship

I would take more seriously the people promoting the idea of AI consciousness if they first materially grappled with the (much more obvious) consciousness of animals and how that affects our moral obligations to them.

Peter Hansen reposted

If "AI" were a mere tool and not a political narrative you wouldn't need to headline "X used AI to do Y" all the time. Anything anyone does while "AI" is involved must reify "AI"'s power and relevance. Because it's not "just a tool", it's a project of disenfranchisement some willingly embrace.

AI = "An Intern". This solves so many of the ethical and practical questions, e.g. is your company responsible if An Intern steals information from other sources? Is your company responsible if An Intern tells someone how to make a pipe bomb? etc

All that money electing politicians who will cut their taxes and slash benefits for everyone else. They’re definitely going to use AI to help everyone out though, they really mean it this time bsky.app/profile/rbre...

22 California billionaires have spent a combined $150 million so far to defeat Prop 40. By spending their fortunes trying to stop California from taxing billionaires, they're making the argument for a billionaire wealth tax more clearly and articulately than anyone else possibly could.

What's going to really annoy me are going to be Americans ignorantly trying to map their ideas about "thermostatic opinion" or whatever to Brazil, ignoring that toxic US-backed fascists own 90% of media in the country and poured dark money into this election.

About 2/3 in, it's already safe to say the Brazilian elections results are FUCKING BLEAK Ultra-conservatives taking over the senate, governors, lawmakers With the direct support of the media and Trump, they'll make things ungovernable even if Lula manages to revert the current President race
