Cellphone footage shows the moments after a man was shot on Thursday in New York City. The man was taken to a nearby hospital and was conscious and receiving medical attention, according to the New York Police Department, which said it was not involved in the shooting. nyti.ms/3UiV5iO

UPDATE: The shooting occurred not far from the rooftop parking deck of a Target store where federal immigration agents sometimes muster before heading into The Bronx to make arrests, an immigration activist told The City Reporter. buff.ly/JMw4dun

Mayor Mamdani plans to build an interstate highway bypass on top of part of the Brooklyn Bridge, according to new renderings of the temporary roadway slated for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway repairs. buff.ly/jDZul3G
Watching this feels like a bunch of Slowpoke memes. Bro, how many news cycles behind are you?
Netanyahu directly attacks Zohran Mamdani (and his wife) from the UNGA podium, calling him the "antisemitic mayor of New York City," parroting The Free Press's stories about Rama Duwaji, tying Mamdani to Hasan Piker, and claiming the mayor is "buddies" with Hamas.

Two months ago, we revived the long-delayed Tremont Avenue busway. This week, it’s up and running. That means 39,000 daily riders on the Bx36 are getting faster, safer, more reliable commutes. www.amny.com/news/bronx-f...

Ignoring how dumb this whole story is (all mayors and pols have media people that send out releases), I still find it incredible how Zohran's doing his own form of "flood the zone". A new story every week that keeps opponents and traditional media busy; none of which leads to anything at all.
"Mr. Mamdani is a master of new media... But as mayor, he has also been able to use taxpayer funds to create a sprawling network of hundreds of friendly influencers to boost his priorities, provide positive depictions of his administration and enhance his popularity."
This will continue to happen as long as it is easier to sue the city/DOT for acting than for not acting. It doesn't matter who is mayor, how much DOT wants this, how many "Vision Zero means Zero" statements the city council speaker puts out, or how many Street Plans we pass.
Court filings reveal that DOT is still waiting on an extra — and not legally mandated — walkthrough with City Council Member Gale Brewer to finalize its design for a protected bike lane on W. 72nd Street — potentially pushing the life-saving infrastructure to next year. buff.ly/56hN0aK
Case in point: bsky.app/profile/spea... We can hold all the hearings we want, we can pass all the laws we want, it doesn't matter unless those laws change how the courts handle these cases, or how individual CMs will respond to those changes.
Vision Zero means zero deaths. My statement with CM Shaun Abreu.
It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears but we're finally launching our very first Open Street on Austin Street! @mayor.nyc.gov make our day and drop by unannounced!
The first Austin Street Open Street day is this Sunday, August 30! Come enjoy a better, safer #AustinStreet!

The City Council finally got a chance to air their grievances about the Mamdani administration's rollout of the state-level pied-à-terre tax, and the result was as languid as the weather outside. hellgatenyc.com/pied-a-tumbl...

There is a universe here where Bruce can win simply because he's not an establishment Dem. We saw this with the right shift in NYC in 2024, a shift that Zohran reversed because it turns out NYC didn't become more MAGA, but more anti-establishment. And anti-establishmentism has only grown.
Speaking at the police academy in Nassau County, Trump claims Gov. Hochul and Mayor Mamdani have "fought like hell" against securing U.S. borders and tax cuts for seniors. Not really clear what he's referring to, since neither Hochul nor Mamdani can dictate federal policy.

The Trump administration has agreed to roughly $4 billion in settlements this year to cancel planned offshore wind projects, including a $1.22 billion deal with German utility RWE announced Thursday, with billions more in projects still at risk
Explain to me how this isn't proof that the council needs a complete reform. You have Elected Officials mad that the govt is considering hiring someone who worked on a set of ballot proposals that the people voted for. Proportional Representation. It needs to happen.

I have negative faith that this will lead to anything good. They're probably just gonna pass more unfunded laws. As an institution, the council is completely broken.
Every New Yorker deserves to move around our city freely and safely, regardless of how they get around. That’s why the NYC Council is launching a comprehensive review of where existing laws can be stronger enforced, and what additional solutions are needed to keep New Yorkers safe.
I don't disagree with the underlying idea, but I do think a lot of the shitification we're seeing isn't people choosing to be cheap as much as it is a lack of competition. There used to be a need to put money into R&D to beat your competitors, but as there are fewer and fewer of those, less so .
I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

ANOTHER death in ICE custody, this time at the controversial Delaney Hall facility. This makes 54 deaths since Trump took office; 1 every 8 days in 2026. His mother says he was denied adequate medical care for chronic conditions, a common accusation ICE has strenuously denied.
I love how when one of these things "breaks containment", the others all of a sudden start doing the same thing. Have any of the Chinese ones ever "broken containment"?

I definitely think there's something wrong with how often we're doing charter revisions for what should be legislation changes. But at the same time, the fact that ppl keep voting to remove powers from the council is proof that the council broken as a democratic institution.
A spokesperson for Council Speaker Julie Menin says the body is "concerned by the speed and process through which" Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Charter Revision Commission has advanced five ballot questions for November, warning of "unintended consequences."
