The reason we keep hearing about desperate schemes to boost Republican chances in the midterms—Announce we're buying Russian diesel! Sue to preemptively reject a Democratic victory in Alaska!—is because they don't have a secret plan that will overturn a midterm loss, not because they do.

60 years since Aberfan disaster. It is the first news event I really remember from my childhood. I had just started primary school so I suppose that partly explains it. My parents were glued to the special TV coverage - again with a young family this clearly hit them.

Open this photo up and look for the small, white dot just left of centre. It looks like Venus, shining brightly in the twilight sky. But it's us. It's Earth. From Mars.

Excellent piece. Anyone involved with a secondary school, local authority or any other public sector organisation will know first-hand how big (and growing) a problem this is.

New post: "Drowning in slop" Large parts of the state are being increasingly overwhelmed with complaints, appeals, objections.... written by AI. It's gumming up every process. Britain is particularly vulnerable. How bad has it got and what can we do about it? samf.substack.com/p/drowning-i...

This is quite extraordinary. I don't think I have heard a more coherent, articulate and accurate deconstruction & demolition of Nigel Farage's ReformUK, Tory & Restore policy than this. In under 85 seconds! @rafaelbehr.bsky.social is on here folks and worth a follow.

Concluding the meeting with the American delegation in the US two days ago, after receiving a tirade of threats from Trump officials, Ukraine's Budanov turned when leaving and said, "We are now going to burn every last Russian refinery and every last port to hell. All of it, down to the final one."

If I was a conservative, I'd be less concerned about liberal thought-control in universities and more concerned that educated people seem to have completely rejected my philosophy.

Who will speak for me when I can no longer speak for myself? So enjoyed talking to David Runciman about the politics of old age and Beauvoir's astonishingly prescient 1970 book on Old Age - La Vieillesse.
