I think a lot could be said about how fandoms are very much structured to be consumerist without any critical analysis of capitalist production, and how this is the logical end result of that.

asbestos is such a depressing case, indeed: "Looking back in the light of present knowledge, it is impossible not to feel that opportunities for discovery and prevention of asbestos disease were badly missed." Thomas Legge, ex Chief Medical Inspector of Factories, in Industrial maladies, 1934

And this does real harm in the world. The media and policymakers too often only listen to those who build/sell this tech, despite them having not only an extremely narrow view of the issue at hand, but also conflicts of interest deeper than their pockets. >>

More generally, "you don't use it so you don't have standing to critique it" is a move to construct expertise narrowly and erase the expertise of people best qualified to expose the harms. >>

Thinking still more about the AI booster discourse that tries to undermine critical work on the topic by saying "They don't even use it, how can they possibly know what they're talking about." >>

Okay, I propose a slogan for this: "Janky until proven functional, period." And note that that assumes HIGH standards for functionality, established in the specific use case.

But speaking of staying in one's lane, can we PLEASE switch the default position from "It's fine to use 'AI' for this thing I'm not an expert in" to "Yeah, I'd be really skeptical of any use cases and need to see strong evidence that it's okay, but I'm not the one who can produce that evidence"?

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, โ€œhey man thatโ€™s not funnyโ€ or โ€œwow thatโ€™s fucked upโ€ and there is no reward

... and much, much more from MANY voices. When the EA claim "no one has been warning you about this stuff" they are doing a double erasure: 1) Of the people doing the warning 2) Of the actual harms they are warning about bsky.app/profile/emil... >>

But the insidious thing is that the argument seems to be: No one has been telling you to worry about this stuff/you're all asleep at the wheel! (And they've caught Bernie with this, among others.) >>

In making that rhetorical move, they are attempting to erase all of the work that we HAVE BEEN doing to warn the public and policymakers about the real harms being done in the name of "AI". >>

It's likely part of the EA campaign to infiltrate (what they consider) the Left, either to consolidate power behind "AGI/ASI is inevitable" or (perhaps for some) because they fear that the Right has been captured by their local enemies (effective accelerationists). >>

There seems to be a coordinated talking point among the EA folks that the "standard" approach to "AI" on "the Left" is "AI is just stochastic parrots so no need to worry about it". (Sorry for all the scare quotes, but y'know) >>

I remember listening to Chris Hayes' podcast at the start of Trump II and his guest talking about how the Brazilian movement that defeated Bolsonaro had a saying "We're not letting go of anyone's hands." Way too many people think it's okay to let go of some peoples' hands.

The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!" Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

I donโ€™t think many nondisabled people realize that laws mandating accommodations are purposefully weak. Your employer gets to decide what an โ€œundue burdenโ€ is. They hardly ever get called to account anyway, but if they do, they can cry about money or work hours or pretty much anything they like.

Researchers at the Tech Transparency Project (TPP) say they have discovered hundreds of new disturbing ads containing child sexual abuse material, after a previous similar incident. This time, they were able to identify images of real children.

1. AFM, the labor union representing professional musicians in North America, is paying tribute to Dolly Parton, who was a member of its Nashville Local 257 for 58 years. AFM says that for decades, Dolly consistently filed union contracts for her recording sessions, live gigs and tours.

Dolly Parton knew what it was like to struggle as she fought for working families her whole career. From providing free books to kids to giving working women our "9 to 5" anthem, she was an icon and an inspiration. Rest in power to our union sister. We will always love you.
