Damn, Paul Schrader too? Back in 2017, he gave an interview claiming that audiences were letting filmmakers down after First Reformed slipped beneath the radar. Now that he’s pro-AI, it sure casts that film in a much more cynical light - pro-environment until an AI bro offers him a wad of cash. (1)

I read shit like this and think about how sir ian mckellan broke down during LotR filming because he was struggling to perform to a bunch of tennis balls on sticks in a greenscreen set

"'I have seen it on the set. And it’s heartbreaking! It’s heartbreakingly beautiful,' Herzog told Variety on 'The Mandalorian' world premiere red carpet. 'It looked absolutely convincing. It made you cry when you saw it.'"

thankfully this is literally and functionally impossible for now, in the past, and for the conceivable future i mean eventually we need to start splitting hairs over what 'thing' and 'new' mean, but without a shadow of a doubt it will not make New Art for a long long long time, possibly not ever

He can have One Good point but I still hate him. He's an Invasive Doomer Nihilist between questioning that one woman on who her baby's father is when it's none of his business, or listening to the Bear Man audio before saying not to share that with anyone else ever. I just fucking hate him.

can we take this attitude and go clown all the people praising the slopperific, pro-Canadian propaganda videos that have been popping up? people are eating them up like candy and it boils my blood. i share the fuck-this-regime sentiment but goddamn.

If a standard movie costs $10 million and makes $100 million takes a year to make and an ai “vibe directed” movie costs $1 million and makes $20 million and takes a month to make … even if the $10 million dollar masterpieces are still being made, the “vibe directed” swill will overwhelm the system.

It’s the “good enough” economy (and enshittification, of course). Advertising is already being consumed by it. Roku is trying ai shorts. The problem is that low budget beginner filmmakers will have to work a thousand times harder to get noticed enough to get good enough to make blockbusters.

Yeah, I imagine there's a version of this where he says 'you will fail' in a way that indicates it's worth trying anyway despite the inherent futility of existence. Then there's the other version. This is that other version.

I love that I can distinctly hear the cadence of his voice saying this. Something else AI could only mimic, never invent.

It's hard for me to imagine someone admiring Werner Herzog enough to make a whole feature-length film project dedicated to aping his style and yet somehow having such a deep and utter contempt for everything Herzog stands for.

That man has always inserted his entire arse into everything he did, whether it was asked for or no. I say this as someone who has nothing but the greatest admiration for everything he's ever done.

So well put… generative AI is going to give you roughly the median output for what it's prompted with… where median can generally be assumed to be mediocre at best, some normalized amalgamation of what people have already done in the respective space.

If mediocrity is good enough for your use case and you don't need to develop your own skillset to ever achieve more, then generative AI may get the job done well enough for you. That's not really gonna cut it in art.

AI filmmaking is just so obviously antithetical to Herzog's whole ethos. He's all about going out and doing insane stuff for real, and getting the catharsis that can only come from great exertion and pain Should have tried copying a Russo Bros movie, I'd argue AI is the culmination of their ethos

FWIW I've always admired Herzog's movies more than I enjoy watching them, and I really like some of the Russo's movies in spite of their phoniness and glaring flaws. "Put the most possible fan service on screen, who cares if it looks kind of flat and fake" is apparently a very viable ethos too!
