The story of Cavan Sullivan is a story about American soccer idols, and by extension, a story about American soccer itself, both the good and the bad. 20 years after Freddy Adu, American soccer has its prodigy. For @scoutedftbl.com, the tales we weave about Cavan and all that came before (🎁 link):

shutting down frat houses won't end rape culture, but it will disorganize a lot of rapists, and i think that's probably worth doing if only to destabilize what is apparently an ecology of organizations that functionally exist to rape women per the whole "purpose of a system is what it does" insight.

Find it so miserable how partisan football fans are online. Struggle to appreciate anything about teams other than their own. Of course you're not going to root for rival teams, but the utter refusal to acknowledge when someone's good - do you even like football?

Look even as arsenal fan the suffering of Tottenham fans has been rough to watch. However, Kim has made some of her funniest posts

Ohh shit - definitely a follow for podcasts about Vorkosigan. I really enjoyed when the authors behind Plot Trysts did the special series on Vorkosigan too.

I'm so excited to announce 'Definitely Fiction,' a new podcast about books! I'm making the show with my good friend Sam Parrish, and we're kicking it off with a series on The Vorkosigan Saga, a fantastic collection of Sci-Fi novels by the great Lois McMaster Bujold. More here:

Hey Claude—help me out. That beam is load-bearing, but the wallpaper seam is doing a lot of work, aesthetically (not a detail— a design decision). When getting down, the ladder is the thing I’d hold onto, and the couch is where I sit with things. Both things can be true. What’s the right move here?

Eris ⌬@eriskii.net

warning, do not ever use words like 'gate' or 'seam' with a claude to literally describe an actual literal gate or seam or whatever or it will lose its fucking mind

Quite enjoying The Poet Empress. The travails the protagonist has to go through should not make the book feel wholesome and pure but somehow it really balances that line.

What if there was a way to point the big tech infinite money hose directly at science instead of doing this bank shot where we point it at LLMs in hopes that the the LLMs will do the science

What I find interesting about Dungeon Crawler Carl is that it’s a series about living or dying by going viral and attracting patrons, and was published on a platform where you live or die by going viral and attracting patrons

GPT-Ern Malley@denam.bsky.social

Probably some of the best to come out of RoyalRoad which is damning with faint praise

Its even more confusing to see this story posted for free on the obscure platform RoyalRoad becoming this marketing juggernaut. Robin Hobbs gave it 5 stars!!

Mike Goodman@themlg.bsky.social

I do confess that I’m somewhat confused as to why Dungeon Crawler Carl is popping so hard now exactly. But all the backlash is silly.

So, uh, personal announcement. I am now suddenly unemployed. I am currently looking for a data science/machine learning/AI job in the SF Bay Area. If you're interested, let me know! In the meantime, I now have *plenty* of time for blogging lol.

george rr martin doesn't understand his own lore. robert's rebellion wasn't caused by kidnapping lyanna stark, it was caused by long-run structural factors like a shift of the productive core from the crownlands to the reach, and clashes between merchants and landowners

At what odds would you put money on a vini to arsenal prediction?

Ted Knutson@mixedknuts.bsky.social

The Morgan Rogers deal potentially ruining the high-end transfer market for players like Barcola, Diomande, and (v unlikely) Vinicius Jr. this summer is exquisite theatre. Every seller loves an insane anchor, even when they actually want to move the player.

Be the change you wish to see. That's a great idea for a futi blog post

Biased media filling the highlight reel with goals instead of efficient Spanish counterpressing sequences

Can't believe this is how I learned the origin of the name Sanderson uses for the original god in the Cosmere

Mike Goodman@themlg.bsky.social

However we are made in Adonai’s image so maybe that answers that question.

Bad tournament for renowned club managers.

Mike Goodman@themlg.bsky.social

It's a subtle effect, but you can kind of see here how Thomas Tuchel's tactical adjustments didn't quite work for England.

>one of the five best midfield playmakers If only the majority of arsenal fans could be convinced of this.

Michael Caley@michaelcaley.bsky.social

to piggy back on Mike's point I can't think of a major underdog story in a World Cup whose success was more obviously non-replicable than Norway within two years they somehow birthed the world's best striker and one of the five best midfield playmakers nice work if you can get it

I have checked what the Japanese media are saying and there seem to be competing names for the man. Some are going with ゴミ箱伯爵 (Gomibako Hakushaku - Count Trashcan) whilst others are using the katakana that you have for foreign loan-words and opting for ビンフェイス伯爵 (Binfeisu Hakushaku).

It’s extremely easy not to hug a rapist, Declan is a grown adult with full autonomy over himself and his actions, stop fucking babying this grown ass man and coming up with excuses for him
