A while back I wrote a couple of articles evaluating various image compression programs. My original methodology had some issues, so I took the time to dot all my 'i's and cross all my 't's. And now, at long last, the improved versions of those posts are up! www.rachelplusplus.me.uk/blog/2025/06...

rachelplusplus.me.ukEvaluating Image Compression Tools - Rachel++When I wrote the last part of my AVIF encoder series, I only did a very minimal comparison between tinyavif and other, more widely used, image and video encoders. Today we'll revisit that and explore ...

To defend yourself against this, please make sure your immune system is enabled. Note that some particularly nasty viruses will attempt to disable your immune system, so make sure to check your settings regularly!

If something does manage to get past your immune system, the human body unfortunately does not support standard exploit mitigations such as ASLR. But anecdotally rest, hydration, and soup are effective alternatives. If these do not work, please consult your nearest human repair technician.

Infected users have reported a variety of effects, including abnormally high temperatures, suggesting that these so-called "viruses" may be using your body to mine cryptocurrency, or perhaps to brute-force weak TLS keypairs.

Quoting myself from a day ago - "The problem is thinking that the product of a programmer is code. It isn't, really, the code is just the final stage. The actual valuable thing the programmer produces is the underlying mental model. Without that, the code is just tech debt"

People talking about shit like dlss5 and here I am going "I made my real mode x86 assembly better so now my 1 layer tile renderer for 160x120 resolutions runs at 60fps on a 33MHz 386 n_n"

Recently I've been doing a bunch of experiments on how to configure social media previews for my websites, in particular how to sort out preview images. I'll write up the details properly soon, but a quick thread of what I've found:

There's *one* happy case that more or less works everywhere: a single large banner image, without transparency, specified through *both* OpenGraph and Twitter Card metadata. That gets displayed above/below the text part of the preview fairly consistently.

If you want anything fancier: transparency, or a small logo at the side instead of a large banner, or multiple images, then a) you have to have a fallback because that won't work everywhere, and b) you need to serve different metadata to different sites by detecting the User-Agent strings they use.

BREAKING: The world's most sensitive dark matter detector has announced it has spotted something it can't easily explain: a single event that's tantalizingly consistent with a type of theorized dark matter particle. Very early days yet, but pretty wild. 🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

looking at my webserver logs for the first time in a hot minute and like, i know common decency is a dead concept at this point, but putting "example.com" in your scraper bot's user-agent string is ridiculous

Reverse engineering a binary with partial RTTI really gives a similar high to deduction games like type help, TR-49, roottrees,... "I know you have to exist, but *where are you*" at a base class' constructor/vtable/default-implementation functions. Such a high when you end up finding it!

I finally sent off something that has been hanging over my head for literal months. Really, really glad to be done with it, and looking forward to having all of that mental space back

The website it's on has really good tools for marking possibilities and checking if the numbers you've put in so far are right. So even as someone who doesn't do a lot of Sudoku puzzles, it's very approachable, though it will probably eat an unreasonable amount of your time.

I've been improving my image compression project on and off for the last six months or so. Today I got it to basically where I want it feature-wise, so I've put out an alpha release and written a quick little blog post about it: www.rachelplusplus.me.uk/blog/2026/06...

rachelplusplus.me.ukTinyavif v2.0 alpha - Rachel++I've put out a preview of the next version of tinyavif. It's basically feature-complete to what I want v2.0 to be, and I've run some quick correctness tests, so it's ready for experimental use.
