It's three weeks later, and said write-up is finally finished! Including a quick introduction into the nuances of dynamic_cast and how GCC implements it as a comparison point! Also including a discussion on how MWCC's dynamic_cast is just straight up broken 😂 sephdb.github.io/mwcc-abi/RTTI/

Guess who just found a runtime bug in an old compiler? This girl 😂 MWCC's runtime implementation of dynamic_cast is fucked for downcasts to ambiguous bases, in games at least as recent as 2010, write-up incoming after I've describing the wild way the compiler itself outputs RTTI in the first place.

i'm honestly baffled and sickened how many people in creative industries don't seem to understand that the process itself is valuable because it leads to a kind of iterative development of ideas and concepts that make for a much better end result that you will just not get with generative AI

WHY DOES THIS SOUND SO WELL? I changed the music box clip to a pm64 instrument I had extracted from the game years ago cause I wanted to test this one since it was an edgecase THIS SHOULDN'T SOUND THIS WELL WTF

If you want to make AI text or images or code I guess you do you (although you're buying into a fascist pillaging of the commons and environmental destruction, so uhh, don't do you actually) but it doesn't make you an author, artist, or even programmer and it never fucking will

i sorta liked this article. it explains how using AI to build a product, even if the horizon on technical debt from AI code is pushed out further, your product is still going to fall off the product management cliff pawelbrodzinski.substack.com/p/when-an-ai...

pawelbrodzinski.substack.comWhen an AI Prototype Turns into a Product: The Product Management CliffWe have incentives to use AI extensively in product management. Yet, as much as with engineering, it creates a whole new set of challenges.

I certainly hope nobody makes the mistake of conducting business with this company in the future, or involving them in any processes.

these fucking guys, man. “surely there must have been some mistake” “nah bro we did that on purpose and our company culture is so wild this is a normal thing to say on the public Internet”

I let myself get roped into experimenting with AI coding agents, because I got told to "at least try it and then you can judge it". I figured it would help me understand what all the fuss is about as well. And what can I say... I've converted! ...from an AI hater to an AI super-hater. 🧵

people who are fine with AI code that is completely opaque to the people generating and using it might as well be literal aliens to me. there is no way i can bridge that gap

“AI is inevitable blah blah blah” I refuse that ”reality” and substitute it with my own where people still make shit out of love with their own two hands.

I’ll be fair that you’ll have to be pretty out there to fork a programming language while doing contract work while making commercial creative software. But I’ll be damned if I let AI win, we’ll see how long it’ll be before I’ve reinvented every wheel these jerks are ruining

ok non-tech ppl might be hearing some scary things about "critical vulnerabilities" involving certificates. the main thing you need to know, without getting down in the weeds about it, is that the fourth seal is broken. lo, a rider approacheth upon a pale steed, and his name is Death

i've recently heard that some ai bros want to make an smw central alternative because we don't allow gen ai content on the site. here's my direct response to those people. "who owns rom hacking?" and other questions ai poisons us with shoujo.gay/who-owns-rom...

So many software engineers don’t seem to enjoy writing code, and I couldn’t relate less. It’s basically the closest thing to feeling like an actual wizard. The best shit of all time.

sorry, code is fucking beautiful. its fucking magical i can type words in the thing and fucking TRIANGLES just appear ? oops i typed it wrong and the triangles did something i didn't EXPECT ?? now weird shit is happening ?? this is the best shit of all time. i was born to fight the computer

its always deeply frustrating to me the idea that code could be considered anything other than art code is so deeply expressive you can learn an enormous amount from someone by looking at the way they code for example i have learned several people i know are psychopaths

it really does feel like they just got away with unprecedented amount of theft of expertise, and are now profiting off of it while replacing the professional opportunities for the very crafts and humans it trained on I never thought I would see the concept of expertise get so devalued

We need whole cross discipline, college level, courses on how the human mind is primed for this. How we are forged to form community, how we seek a deeper meaning to our existence, how we Want To Believe so fucking much. We were built to fall for this. We are in so much trouble.

Honestly, this is worse than NFTs and cryptocurrencies. People I really thought would know better, are falling for this. Your brain is fucking with you. You’re seeing Jesus on toast.

LLMs produce statistically plausible text given a particular context. «Agents» run that in a loop, «given everything we’ve said so far and this new text, what is the most plausible next piece of text?» There is nothing there. It’s all in people’s heads.

Coding is normally an iterative process where I constantly reevaluate what I'm doing, potentially correcting course or branching towards a slightly different solution when I realize that there's a better/cleaner/more elegant way to do things.

This is something I see many people pointing out, from artists to mathematicians: the result is not everything, the *process* has intrinsic value. It's probably even truer for beginners who haven't honed their skills yet.

you know how the evil thing in dead space wants to turn all living beings into dead tissue and clump it all together into like a planet-sized mass of undead flesh. well saying "ethical AI is possible" is like saying "hypothetically you could make the big necrotic flesh planet through ethical means"

If you dislike AI please stop saying AI can code now. Just because it can generate code that works for some loose definition of the word works doesn't mean it can code because coding is so much more than that. Please, I'm begging you, you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to them

"When we use “AI” to eliminate that understanding rather than raise it up to a higher level, to entirely destroy that creative decision-making process, we do a disservice both to ourselves as programmers and to our users. [...] Slop is slop, no matter the medium."
