I'm excited to announce the first of two essays I've produced this year will be published on 28 October. "Means, Motive, and Opportunity" looks at how fossil fuel producers worked to buy the numbers used to direct Australia's response to the science of climate change from the very beginning.

"...a dependency on equipment you buy once is very different from a dependency on fuel you buy every month. When a shipping lane closes, a fuel-importing economy feels it within days. If solar panel exports stopped tomorrow, the panels already installed would keep generating for decades."

Jan Rosenow@janrosenow.bsky.social

NEW: Hormuz reminded fuel importers that buying energy cargo by cargo means importing every price shock. In TIME, María Mendiluce and I argue the response will decide who becomes the electrostates of the next decade. @wemeanbusiness.bsky.social time.com/article/2026...

What is true is that this was a conflict—and make no mistake, this was a conflict; this was a protracted battle in a hybrid war, more than anything—that was largely fought by large numbers of people laboriously working to unfuck the nation's informational environment.

Answering this as a quote because it’s something I think a lot of people would like to know: Deloitte et al sell credible blame for governments. Their role is not to provide solutions. It is to give the government something to point to when a decision is unpopular. ‘The report said we had to’.

boothwobblies.bsky.social@boothwobblies.bsky.social

How on earth do Deloittes keep getting government business? Astounding misuse of tax dollars.

To be fair, at this point those Hollywood Blockbusters are all just remakes of the same film.

As someone who covered Robodebt in part, it's clear nothing has really changed. Worse: the politics of federal Labor on social security are baffling. We keep hearing about how people have "lost trust in institutions". Wiping these debts seem a simple answer to help. Instead, they rewrote the rules.

Instead, we got the silly lie that there were 56 recommendations from the Robodebt Royal Commission instead of 57, the social security system left as is, the old debts validated in legislation, and bipartisan consensus on "the best form of welfare is a job". But we ask: why are people so angry?

For full transparency: I reported on Robodebt, received and successfully fought a Robodebt in 2016, fought my then-partner's Robodebt and was someone who, at times, was made to repay money according to the unknowable calculations of Centrelink during my time on social security in my early 20s.

This would have signalled to anyone who has had to rely on social security that they no longer have to worry about being targeted in the future. Raising the rate is another decision that would have helped remove demand for services and assure the ~750k people social security that life gets better.

Rather than recalculate these, Labor passed new legislation to retrospectively validate debts they had already conceded were illegal. Now people are having to go back decades to find evidence with which to defend themselves. This is beyond indefensible. Spitting in the faces of Robodebt victims.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

More insights:

And, most importantly, thanks to the vital mobilisation of young people. Students took to the streets the day after the first round elections, kickstarting massive movements that saw the largest public demonstrations in Brazil since the days of Diretas Já at the end of the military dictatorship.

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

"When modern societies engage in extreme violence, they rely on two types of people: those who beat, torture and kill at close quarters, and those who plan, organize and order the killing at a safe distance[...] modern genocide is the product of those who belong to the second category."

theguardian.comHow do human beings explain taking part in genocide? NAZA provides a chilling look | Omer BartovIt’s easier to blame brutes and sadists for extreme violence. But as we see in the documentary, modern genocides are fueled by people who are uncomfortably recognizable

"These are not the sadists of the popular imagination of what genocide looks like. They are not the typical supporters of extremist ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. Many are upper-middle-class graduates of the best schools who joined prestigious intelligence units."

What most people don't know: when you fill up a petrol car most of the energy never moves it. Petrol car: 13–21% of the crude oil's energy reaches wheels. Electric car on today's UK grid: 43–45%. Electric car on wind+solar: 77–80%. That's why we don't need to replace fossil energy one for one.
