this is an insane way to frame this attempted murder. i hope that chud rots

It's a choice (a bad one) to tell readers this driver "passed too close to cyclists" when there's video evidence showing he drove his car into them, made contact and hurt someone. Fellow journalists: we can explore the nuances of punishment for drivers without obfuscating their dangerous behavior.

this article is absolute garbage and this man is a menace lines like "He prefers taking back roads because he can easily pull off if he feels a vertigo attack coming on" just barfed out with no further discussion on this man being a sociopathic freak

his entire defense is basically "yeah i wanted to murder them for annoying me, fuck you this is america" and the entire thing is both-sidesing it. what

imo low key the craziest detail is the handicapped license plate. this chud has accommodations built into his entire existence (which is very good!) and absolutely no concern for anyone else's rights to the commons

I also like that they're letting us know he believed the law required them to ride single file. As if that would matter even if it were true.

This was the subject of a sci-fi novel "The Player of Games" People in this one nation competed in games to attain political rank and power. The sole purpose of that power was to be allowed to torment lesser people. More power -> more sadism -> more victims. Those people really exist.

"I was looking for an excuse to murder them, and my erroneous belief that the law requires them to ride single file provided enough self-righteous rage to tip me over."

It's crazy because people usually give some BS excuse for road rage about how they were rushing to some emergency. Not this guy, he takes slow road and pulls over for breaks when he needs them. JFC So he essentially admits he tried to kill these cyclists just because he didn't like them on the road

I fear even if they were obviously breaking the law by lying on the pavement and rolling home like cans of chef boyardee, he still wouldn't have the right to hit them with his car. Thats kind of the #1 rule of driving.

Even if he had been correct and they hadn’t been following the law, you don’t get to execute them for it! Record and report it!

We had this shit from a local lady here in Ontario, Canada. She followed some cyclists for a couple kilometres, recorded them with her cell phone over her steering wheel, and then yelled at them as she passed, "SINGLE FILE! IT'S THE LAW!" a) it's not the law b) using a phone while driving is

I am not a cyclist but I am a human. This was horrific. It's obviously pro car political crap because how can they not talk about the loss of innocent life because this guy drove into them? I would expect him to be absolutely shattered. Sick

The long horn showed state of mind and intent. That vehicle had plenty of room on the left to maintain a safe distance while he was passing, but he chose NOT to. That was ROAD RAGE, plain and simple.

This right here is why I don’t cycle in Atlanta. I’ve commuted by bike in London; DC; Norfolk, Va.; Christchurch, NZ; and Baghdad. None of them were homicidal toward cyclists the way Atlanta is. Which sucks because I’ve mostly lived here since 1980.

Cycling is my method of transport, it's dangerous everywhere but even more so if the drivers "feel" aggrieved. Y'all are in tanks, I'm fully exposed, just wait or clear, stop buzzing cyclist you jerks.

I agree that this was attempted murder of each and every one of them. I think that him being locked up for the rest of his life is fine; he's got to do the time for the crime!

This guy absolutely deserve to rot in jail, but as a cyclist myself I am also curious about the behavior of the cyclists. Over here it is illegal for cyclists to ride like this. The law specifically says, that even in group cyclists must ride as close to the side as possible and in single row.

"As close to the side as possible" is overly vague and open to interpretation. All the roads in my area have no shoulders, so my rule is to ride at least 12 inches from the edge of the asphalt. Most of the time that is inside the white line. You have to have room for error & riding around obstacles.

Look, he needs to rot in jail. But as a cyclist, it’s illegal to ride like this. Now maybe in Georgia, it’s not illegal to ride like this. But still, the point is. They shouldn’t have been biking like this, and that - in a way, they deserved it 🤷🏻‍♀️ - is that the point?

The legal answer is to pull over, call the police and inform them of the bad cyclists hogging the road.

What has the legality of their behaviour in another country got to do with the driver who: Didn't have to overtake them, Didn't have to overtake them in the same lane, Didn't have to overtake them danger-close, Didn't have to drive into two of them and Didn't have to drive off having hit one?

Czech cycling laws ARE a bit mad about single file riding to be fair. But they also have a strict 1.5 metre passing law and zero alcohol for both cyclists and drivers. So - if all 3 of those are enforced rigorously - maybe it is safer. Big “if” there.

48 US states allow riding two abreast and 35 have 3-foot passing laws. That road is too narrow to pass cyclists riding single file without changing lanes no matter how far to the right they are and Georgia law allows crossing the double yellow to pass bikes. So now you know.

It is legal to pass slow moving traffic like cyclists, horse draw carriages, garbage collectors, or post persons, on a double yellow. As long as it is safe to pass and a respectful (at least 4ft) clearance is kept.

It would be great if someone could get the DMV records of the “journalist“ who wrote that road-rage apologia because I feel like there might be something there.

Well the driver (like almost every other driver) would be two or three abreast everywhere they go. Seems a bit hypocritical to calling for others to go single file, unless you’re prepared to do it yourself.

In many places, especially rural roads, it is recommended/encouraged as a safer option…drivers have better and earlier visibility in order to pass them safely.

The cyclists were wrong by riding three across. The driver could have crossed the double yellow because there was not oncoming traffic. The driver drove purposely drove into one cyclist. The driver then drove on. HE IS GUILTY OF HIT-AND-RUN. A FELONY.

you have to pass cyclists just like you pass a car: fully in the other lane. cyclists hewing to the shoulder encourages a half-lane pass, which is dangerous for everyone involved

yeah and I'm not supposed to weave between traffic and run reds on my bike either I understand why they do it but it doesn't make it not annoying

this accident never would have happened if they were biking solo at max effort to fight the demons in their head instead of going for a slow social ride

All the times I had to slow to 20 mph for tractors growing up. (In Tennessee with curvy roads, not middle America where you can see the road to the horizon).

He intended to hit them, to knock them off their cycles, and to hurt them. Unless he was having a MAJOR medical event while driving, this is multiple attempted manslaughter, at the very least.

Same. I commute a couple miles each workday to the light rail station on my bike, at 4:45am, lights all over my bike, no one around, still I occasionally get menaced by some absolute shithead for no reason. I can only assume people have once or twice been inconvenienced by a cyclist and now it’s war

I love The PNW, but Oregon is one of the most racist states in the nation. It was literally founded so white people could live in a white only state. Black people were given 30 days to leave at one point or be fined and imprisoned.

I live in east TN. At the beginning of this semester, a driver hit 9 members of a local university cycling team, killing 2 and seriously injuring others. They are still dealing with the aftermath. This look GROSSLY negligent if not intentional. I have very little sympathy for this driver.

"a collision" is like "a police-involved shooting". The driver deliberately did it and then (it looks like from the news, not all of which I have read) drove off. Maybe he thinks Bicyclists are all Democrats and he's in a red state so it's legal to run them over?

Well, we do have a GOP candidate (and YouTube influencer) in Texas who has bragged about wanting to run over cyclists and believes he would get away with it. You would think that alone would sink his candidacy but no.

There is obviously space and visibility to pass wide and avoid the cyclists. This is what laws are for. When one person hurts another person in avoidable circumstances.

I might imagine sb could have done sth like this in rage. But now he feels zero guilt or remorse, has only lies to tell. I do hope he spends many years in prison, he richly deserved it.

You can clearly see this asshole speed up then slow to match the speed of the cyclist. If he had maintained speed there would have been no collision

There was a double yellow line. Passing was illegal anyway. But even if it were legal, there was room in the oncoming lane to safely pass the cyclists . . . this was an act of intentional intimidation (because the driver was angry that the cyclists were not single file)? He should do the time.

So why didn't he do that? Just wanted to take out cyclists? Prison is where he belongs. First paved roads were because of cyclists.

sigh... the root cause is an infrastructure failure. these vehicles shouldn't share the same space. the obvious joke was that from a pedestrian point of view *the bikes* are the worst jerks -- but it's all about sharing space and deficient infrastructure.

"...he insists he did nothing wrong". My ass. You can see where he womps on the gas to pass the cyclists then brake checks and drifts over into their group. This is 100% deliberate.

NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Mathew were both killed while riding bicycles. The trial date has just been announced, and it starts in January. Fuck all these psychos.

A good choice. News of the weird regularly ran columns featuring all the middle name waynes who were kilkers and such. I think it was even called the Wayne theory. Markwayne qualifies.

This is just another reminder that shitty people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, levels of intelligence, the list continues. This day will be remembered as when the war of the handicap and the cyclists started. Which 2 wheels are the right wheels?

If he has to pull off the road in case of vertigo, may I suggest that he shouldn’t have a license to drive. This is the equivalent of “I didn’t hear you the first two times you called me Mom”
