Welp, I hope my Senator, @murray.senate.gov, is actually as humiliated and panicked as her expression makes it look like she is. We have to get rid of of this generation of useless Democrats.

Sahil Kapur@sahilkapur.bsky.social

SCHUMER says Democrats are “united” behind three DHS reforms 1/ End roving patrols; tighten the rules on warrants and require ICE to coordinate with local authorities. 2/ Enforce accountability; a uniform code of conduct. 3/ Require masks off, body cameras on, agents carry ID.

If there are *any* Democrats in Congress who will still vote to keep funding this administration when it is using that money to terrorize our cities and refusing to allow congressional representatives their clear right to observe their activities, then those reps need to be primaried into retirement

Ilhan Omar@ilhanmn.bsky.social

I was just denied access to the ICE processing center at the Whipple Building. Members of Congress have a legal right and constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight where people are being detained. The public deserves to know what is taking place in ICE facilities.

Our employers will send $45K of our compensation to insurance companies for premiums for our family of 4 this year. We spend $45K if none of us ever sees a doctor. Would I prefer 12% of our income be sent to the federal government instead to cover premiums AND our actual care? Fucking OBVIOUSLY.

R U ok with paying 8 to 12 pct more in taxes and possibly losing your standard deduction ? R U ok with losing access to different curative medications and care because the government can't afford to pay for them, even after taxing all the billionaires 90 pct?

Miller and Yglesias love to say Trump won by moderating and therefore Democrats must veer right to win. Trump went HARDEST right on the very issues (immigration, race relations) that elite Republicans saw as their biggest electoral liability and on which they begged for moderation. "Experts" indeed.

Tim Miller@timmiller.bsky.social

Trump did what i’m suggesting not you. He went hard right on some issues and bucked the party to the middle on others (war, medicare, social security).

If Dems want to pivot to "kitchen table issue" in their messaging this is the one! Say he has to come to congress for a vote on the tariffs or you don't vote for government funding bill.

As others have pointed out, the idea that we can control their behavior by modeling respectability (cooperating with the compulsory grief around Kirk, for example, and not saying truthful/angry things about him) is akin to an abused person's belief that they can control the abuse by being perfect.

Fascinating survey data on the missing Biden voters by Lake Research. The voters who sat out in '24 weren't looking for a centrist or turned off by trans rights. They want a genuine economic populist agenda: take on corporate greed, lower costs, and make the wealthy pay their fair share.

I keep saying it: The push for AI made so much more sense to me once I realized tech bros talked to it like a woman who won't talk back.

There's something about the way men use LLMs that feel like those men at the strip club who believe that the dancers like them for their personality and wit. They just want a toy that makes them feel good.

There is no Central Committee of Immigrants, planning protests. People are protesting with the symbols of their own community because they feel that community is under attack and want to show support for it. You cannot order them to stop this like in a strategy computer game.

sending 500 marines to a county of nearly 10 million people to stand around holding their dicks with nowhere to sleep is not actually the sign of a successful declaration of martial law

what i see is a white house whose ambitions outstrip its resources, who did not count on facing mass resistance, and which is scrambling to escalate the situation in hopes that a display of force will make people shut up

not sure there's a more embarrassing profession than ICE agent. Oh, you dress like a soldier to abduct sous chefs and throw flashbangs at protesters? Get a real job you loser

In general, I can't think of much that's more useless than an elected official scolding the public about message discipline, which is not the public's job.

I still think the best idea for progressive donors is to just revive every alt-weekly in the country and staff them with 10 reporters each.

I wrote a bit about the misguided effort by Democrats to replicate Joe Rogan the right-wing podcast ecosystem.

Personally I think that the problem with popularists like MattY isn't that they're recommending politically savvy concessions that are unpalatable to those evil, purity-obsessed libs. The actual problem is that the ideology they advocate for is essentially Starmerism, which is a colossal failure.

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

not a unqualified MattY fan at all, but people have rose tinted glasses about how ugly many of the substantive policy concessions that held together things like the New Deal coalition were at times. the stuff done to keep southern democrats in the tent was very grim at times.

America’s Constitutional crisis was 2017-2024, starting as soon as the Constitution’s bans on bribery were no longer in effect, and going through the elevation of an anti-Constitution criminal granted permission by the Supreme Court to break laws. We are now in the post-Constitutional crisis.

Many voters view the Democratic Party as weak, and elite centrists want that to mean "too feminine" because they gender strength as masculine. But people view the party as weak because it so rarely fights for the values it claims to hold.

whether they’re retiring or not this should be the last term for each of them

The final tally to advance the CR is 62-38. The Democrats who voted for cloture, giving Donald Trump everything he wants: Cortez Masto (NV) Durbin (IL) Fetterman (PA) Gillibrand (NY) Hassan (NH) Peters (MI) Schatz (HI) Schumer (NY) Shaheen (NH)

The fight going on in the Democratic Party right now is not between hard left, left and moderate. It’s between those who want to fight and those who want to cave. And Team Fight stretches across all ideological aspects of the Party. Misread this at your own peril.

Then call for Chuck Schumer's removal as Senate Minority Leader. This is a classic banana in the tailpipe: Dem leadership who are in safe seats and most well-funded to hold off a primary challenge will fold like cheap patio furniture to Trump/Musk while rank-and-file Dems post defiant messages.

Tina Smith@smith.senate.gov

Trump and Republicans set this up as an unprecedented power grab so they can slash and burn government services on their terms. I’m a firm NO — on cloture and final passage — on this ‘CR’

Republicans are fascists and Democrats have chosen to be their accomplices.

Josh Marshall@joshtpm.bsky.social

I will just put this out there. If all the senators who are saying they want to block this bill really wanted to badly enough they could force Schumer's hand. This isn't 'if Mike Pence has courage'. A leader doesn't buck the overwhelming majority of his caucus. Doesn't happen.

You are up to date.
