Funding success rates and inparticular fellowships are just beyond a joke. System is broken - it's just luck. Any lingering perception that there's actually a meritocracy is just smoke and mirrors at this point, surely?

I was lucky to recieve a free copy of this and loved it so much I bought a hard copy when it came out. If you love dogs, buy it. It's brilliant and heartwarming and lovely. If you hate dogs, also buy it. It might convince you that you're right! Lol

NEW PAPER: Had a play comparing run length (and software) for DIA proteomics IN PLASMA (cos its not a cell lysate). Tl;dr. If you're benchmarking workflows for differential abundance, checking how many true and false hits you get is a better readout than %CV. pubs.acs.org/jprobs/artic...

Well, City are fucked. #swfc got a 12 point deduction for overvaluing the ground to get round spending rules in 2020. Can only assume that doing the same thing, on a far bigger scale, over 8 seasons, and blocking the investigation, will see City down to AT least League 1?

The statement is seriously damning. PL might chose to not strip them of titles cos that invites chaos. But given how disrespectfully they seem to have behaved - and the scale - I think they'll throw the book at the club. I wouldn't be shocked if they end up being expelled from the League.

Another outstanding thread... 👏👏

🧵 As front-page headlines go, this has to be one of the most misleading I've seen in a long time It's an out-and-out lie But notice the trick they use to get away with it...👀 *They're* not lying - they're just quoting someone else who is👍🏻 In this case, the leader of the opposition🙄 1/33

Science and vaccines for the win!

A massive update: At least ~15 companies~ are selling scientists antibodies using faked validation data. We've documented 18,000+ manipulated images on 17,000+ products sold by leading laboratory suppliers including Thermo Fisher, Abcam, Santa Cruz Biotechnology, Millipore Sigma and Bio-Techne. 1/🧵

A drop in the number of international students coming to the UK cost the country nearly £3 billion, according to new estimates https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/fall-international-student-numbers-cost-uk-ps29-billion

Ouch. Strong Steve Morrow vibes after the 1993 league cup final... #swfc

Adaptive Relief UK@adaptiverelief.bsky.social

Unbelievable. In a game he played zero minutes in, Jordan Henderson got himself a yellow card and then needed to be stretchered off after injuring himself falling over the advertising board while singing #Wonderwall #MexEng *Just after the 55 second mark

I've just contacted a company and their rep has replied with an email which looks very much like an AI rehash: 'I understand that you want *lists my request*', 'I'd like to find out more about your *exact wording of application*' etc. Should I be annoyed? Or keep going until I talk to a human?

I have some sympathy for Kier Starmer. Elected to be boring after the chaos of Johnson/Truss wrecked the Tories, his boringness ended up being his downfall. Yes he made mistakes, but I feel his blandness did for him as he couldn't sieze the narrative. He leaves the UK better than when he took over.

Love this. Can just imagine the conversation. Storch: How can we increase our hospitality takings? Hirsty: Let's see if they can keep up with me! 🤣🤣🤣🍺 #swfc

Shane@shane11.bsky.social

Alongside the new Quixall Club is the launch of Hirsty’s social with David Hirst. He will be at (presumably) all home games and again this is fan engagement that might be regular everywhere else but a pipe dream for #SWFC up until 2 months ago.

There's probably never been a better time to remind you that when David Hockney first took his Mum to California she remarked 'all this lovely weather and nobody puts their washing out'.

I stand by a comment I made last week. If Thermo want to be seen as taking this seriously, they should hold themselves to the same standards as their customers are. Anyone using this kind if 'optimisation' in a paper would be looking at a retraction for fraud.

Reese Richardson@reeserichardson.bsky.social

Thermo Fisher now has a page up in response to our observations. They flatly deny that images were manipulated or fabricated while repeating that images were "optimized for presentation and clarity on the website", no lie, six times. www.thermofisher.com/us/en/home/l...

So do a simple and right thing. Apologise. REMOVE those images where you don't have an unmanipulated original, then rerun your blots and generate a new unmanipulated image. It's not hard... 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Some of the manupulations that have been found are shocking. Doubling down does noone any favours.

The Thermo Fisher situation keeps getting worse. We've now collected 450+ problematic images presented as verification data in TF's antibody catalog. This includes: 🖌️ Dozens more images with duplications or painting 🖨️ Hundreds of blots that all share the same background (behold slideshow below)
