There's probably never been a better time to remind you that when David Hockney first took his Mum to California she remarked 'all this lovely weather and nobody puts their washing out'.

Do Australians hang their washing out? I think they do, but there's nothing likely to get tangled in my British sheets that might nibble my toe and kill me - California feels at least slightly scarier in that regard than Yorkshire.

My Grandmother's instincts on whether it would be a 'good drying day' were at a level of accuracy that would still today not be beatable by a network of supercomputers that does climate models.

This would be very dependent on time of year. Also which specific part of the midlands we are in. She could also calculate the adiabasic lapse rate by sight

R exchanged a few words with him at Glyndebourne a couple of years ago when his Rake’s Progress production was on. She said that he was perfectly charming and impeccably dressed being pushed around in a wheelchair and having a great time. I should be so lucky.

I don’t want to generalise, but in some areas/states in the U.S., I think quite a lot of Homeowners Associations just ban outdoor clotheslines. Really shocked me! Anywho, that quote is fabulously British.

Where I grew up you could put washing out but the items would be covered in bugs/allergens. Wasn't a common practice unless you like little black dead bugs all over it. Also not a fan of sandpaper bath towels.

i’ve recently moved from somewhere where there was no opportunity to hang the washing out to somewhere where there is. It’s great, except I have now been re-introduced to the joys of “birds shitting on the thing that you wanted to wear tomorrow”

Up there with Michael Caine's Mum, visiting Hollywood: "Isn't it beautiful, all the hysteria growing up the walls?" "You never said a truer word, Mum."
