It's always my posts complaining about AI which do the big numbers, which is understandable as it's a shared frustration with a lot of people, but I would hope the more positive stuff I post about got half as much attention. 'cos there's a lot to be positive about.

The nuanced discussion on LLM can’t happen for a long time because the education around it has been deliberately muddied in order to permit massive methods of harm. There is no accessible source of truth for the general public regarding how LLM works, && how it different from ML and AI.

The thing about game development is they want you to think it's like movies: even working on the base-line of a micro-budget you need hundreds of thousands of dollars for cast, crew, equipment, etc... Game dev can be like novels: the only budget you need is your own time and effort and a computer

Yes, I imagine it would be difficult to make a video game if you have absolutely zero relevant skills and refuse to learn any

I stand by the simple act of engaging and celebrating other artists who are actively making and leaning in this moment is the best way to deal with the dread of the moment we find ourselves in. You only engage with the doom posts you fall deeper but there is hope and joy still in making anything.

The main difference between the American Games Industry and the Japanese Games Industry is that the Japanese Game Industry has some sense of continuity, whether that is in the form of individuals, teams, or institutional knowledge, Whereas the American Game Industry eats itself alive every few years

The AAA game industry functionally built itself by buying up the entire 80s/90s Western PC Game market and scrapping it for parts. Origin: gone, Westwood: gone, Sierra: gone, Bioware: gone, the list goes on and on (not to mention the "studios" whose brand names were revived in name only)

The best games are made by centering the humans making them

What's your number one personal game design principle? And even better - does it have a cool name?

I think smaller teams make better games. I think happy people make better games. I think every studio should be thinking of the team as their #1 product and strength, and the games are the OUTPUT of that team. People should be trained, given opportunities, given reasons to WANT to be there

Seriously, go check it out now. The transformation after 48 hours and they have some numbers to work with is staggering. It also confirms what I keep saying: Nobody is actually buying these AI games. Or even playing them for free. The only time they get any airtime is when it's random & unranked.

FYI, the Next Fest page has updated! Where previously it was slop, my top recommendations in the main listing are: Dead of the Brain Queen's Domain ReBlade Annalynn MD Anomalith TETRIC (which is new to me and looks WILD) Derelikt Godzilla: DAMM Surfpunk Prison Of Husks Hell Wait Zero AI. Told ya.

Dominic Tarason@dominictarason.com

Okay, people are already getting really depressed and frustrated with the Next Fest, so I'll say what I said last time round: Wait a day or two. They order the games on the pages by hours played, and 99% of the AI garbage will sink like a stone. Right now it's just undifferentiated and unranked.

holy smokes, conan strikes up a chat with a random lady on the subway and she immediately starts riffing on his level, no problem.

I think I can summarize this one: Remix culture is an interplay between an individual and a known source, whether that source is another Peron in their scene, or from pop culture, someone from history. It desires to exist in that context. AI robs context. It is a launderer and cannot cite or source

Saleem@seemo.bsky.social

I think conflating remix culture with AI seems logical but falls apart if you give it some deeper thought

If you've ever wondered if splitting wood and drinking beer would be a wise combination, try this: store.steampowered.com/app/5023190/... Everything is hand made. The music is hand recorded public domain folk tunes on real instruments. I also recorded 29 different impact sounds in my backyard.

Hey Alec. There are around 8000 demos, and the AI clutter makes things extra hard 🥹 So if you’d like to take a look at our demo, that would mean a lot to us. It’s the coziest sorting game, that has a relaxed or puzzle mode, made by 2 human beans. 🫶 store.steampowered.com/app/5079620/...

Kenney hit the infamous "two billionaires with one post" achievement, remains very rare, also shows once again that money does not equal intelligence, capability, or insight: Kenney is obviously right.

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

I gotta assume the vibe-clones are gonna slow down at some point because you got people basically burning big chunks of money on tokens to produce products that no one lines and makes them very little money like 'oh fuck wait this industry sucks why am I doing this'

Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games. You've got my support 💖
