We get a subexponential time algorithm for 3SAT and apparently the models couldn’t even find one little cryptanalysis result. I guess cryptographers have just been killing it!

Man, Manchester United are such a shambles that my usual schadenfreude has actually morphed into pity.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

Streaming series pitch — Ten 1-hour episodes. The first introduces the ship, crew, and passengers … ending with Wireless Operator Cottam getting the Titanic’s distress call. Play out the rescue in real time as a procedural. When they pull the last survivor from the water, roll end credits.

You absolutely should see "You Can See Everything" in theaters and without spoilers, but know this: apparently people who see it having read Bad Blood are a lot less ambiguous on the "Is Elizabeth Holmes being manipulative?" question than those who haven't.

the One Weird Trick to better understand companies / biz headlines is: the first approximation of corporate health is not "profit" but "free cash flow", ie cash in vs. cash out "profit" is very nuanced and like 5th on the list of what to look at. sadly most journalists don't understand this either

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

Mostly I'm laughing about this but there really is something sick at the heart of our epistemology on this site sometimes. Probably it was always like this, but things aren't true because your ideology demands it. All you have to do is read.

none of this means a given company or industry is healthy, but if you look at a business headline and think "clearly this is completely insane" - I mean, sometimes, yes? But much of the time it may be that it only seems insane because you fundamentally misunderstand what the numbers actually mean.

a good eg is stock-based compensation, employees getting stock options. This is "the company giving value away" so must be accounted for as an expense, so it hits "profit", often hard. It's common for high-growth companies to be "unprofitable" for years, while making lots of $, purely bc of this!

man science fiction authors, by and large, do *not* understand capitalism (or even finance.) by all means disapprove of it but it's much more effective & resonant to do so in a comprehending way rather than a completely befuddled one!

I think the world would be a better place if more people were into horror media analysis. Horror media shines light on the parts of our society that most choose to look away from. Horror is deeply political, even the sleazy and dated bits. Especially those.

I submit that the greatest depiction of the machinery of creative success, in all fields, is a passage in THE DIRT: CONFESSIONS OF THE WORLD'S MOST NOTORIOUS ROCK BAND, about Motley Crüe - really! - here: xhttps://www.tumblr.com/jjoelswatch/4790968805/the-cog-theory-to-the-developmentmaturation-of-a

I stopped grinding myself into the ground when I saw what sold the most copies of a media tie in novel, and realized how the machinery works. Secondly, I almost had a tv show made out of a book, which would have blown sales off the roof. But since the deal fell through, the novel trickles on.

for trad-published novelists, the first cog is publication: the second cog is "some success"; the third is bestsellerdom; because it's novels not 1990s-music, there is a fourth Cultural Phenomenon cog. (Basically, every time your default audience drops by an order of magnitude, a new cog is added.)

meaning that for self-published novelists, there are *five* cogs, sorry, I didn't invent The Machine, I'm just telling you how it works. There is still a path to Cultural Phenomenon! ...but each and every cog is a cruel mistress.

Roger Ebert once said that he had been in a few film audiences which got up to dance, but ‘Stop Making Sense’ was the only film where he experienced an audience of CRITICS getting up to dance

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

“Stop Making Sense” premieres 42 years ago today. 🎂 “.. shooting live music is the most purely cinematic thing you can do,” said director Jonathan Demme. “Ideally, the cinema is becoming one with the music. There is little artifice involved. There's no acting. I love it.” [“Slippery People”]

I have this theory that our current ... fraught ... social dynamics stem from the world becoming so complex and fast-moving that few feel real confidence in their own opinions, and it's much easier to instead base your personal epistemology on Those People Are Wrong! instead.
