I'm not the first person to note this, but authoritarian crackdowns are much more difficult in cities, where's there's public space & people can gather & find solidarity. That's partly why reactionary governments everywhere prefer suburbanization -- it disperses, dilutes, & atomizes the public.

Enough with the beating girlfriends stuff, let's talk about something serious.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: This has been reported for a while. Cory Mills was accused of beating a girlfriend in his DC apt. Are you concerned about these allegations? JOHNSON: You have to ask Rep. Mills about that. He's been a faithful colleague. I don't know the details. Let's talk about things that are really serious

Roberts is saying that the court's own precedent from a couple of years ago, where it ruled that Alabama had to draw racial fair maps, doesn't apply to this (identical) case, essentially because the Alabama case was poorly argued. It's a terrible argument, but the hill Roberts is gonna die on.

If we are taking in “trillion” of dollars in tariffs: 1. Why haven’t we paid down a cent of the debt? 2. Why can’t we afford to not fuck millions of people over with expiring insurance subsidies? 3. Why is none of it being used to help the abysmal job market?

I mean it helped - they were murdering and torturing Kenyans for close to a decade and Malaysians for over a decade after that. It also helped that there was an active violent resistance to go along with the nonviolent resistance. So the British chose to work with the peaceful guy

71.5% of ICE detainees have no criminal convictions, according to government data. Don’t fall for Trump’s lies about targeting the “worst of the worst.” As Trump's regime terrorizes communities to fill up detention centers, remember that some of his biggest donors are private prison corporations.

Public opinion research, like all social science, is built on assumptions. I've thought about writing a piece on how "popularism" is built on very flawed assumptions, making its recommendations misguided, but @anatosaurus.bsky.social does such a good job with that I'll just link to this article.

1. More Americans work at the Cheesecake Factory than in the entire coal industry, and that won't change. It's because of automation, not snooty libs. 2. Coal energy is now more expensive than wind and solar. 3. So this means: higher energy prices, more pollution, no jobs benefit. Genius!

Nobody cares about the victims in the Dallas ICE shooting apparently. The first I've heard about one of them was on CNN today. He's fighting for his life in the hospital --- he was brought to the US when he was 13. He's 33 now. No criminal record. I just don't know what to say anymore.
