Would Elon Musk stoop so low as to show off his absurd "flying car" just to distract from being outed for funding Ken Paxton, turning off Starlink to Ukraine, and the release of Alex Gibney's damning documentary about him? Would you put it past him? www.austinchronicle.com/screens/film...

Essential reading. The "BS semantic rabbit hole" trick Fielder pulls is part of what shows the real flaws of this film, and it seems like a determined effort to infantalize Holmes, make her look incapable of committing a very organized fraud.

“'You Can See Everything' is a hilarious, thrilling, fascinating, beautiful piece of art. What it certainly is not is a documentary, and it’s dangerous to pretend that it is,” writes Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz. https://bit.ly/4Bk2nDJ

The Fielder and Oppenheim bros are already swarming on this to ignore the basic fact that Theranos was a crime scene and Holmes was convicted. Well made as their film is, maybe this wasn't the topic or the time to turn it into a sophomore class on post-structuralism.

The Fielder bros seem determined to ignore that the film will have an impact on perceptions of Holmes. They're also so busy slapping themselves on the back for liking a film that centers on subjectivity that they ignore that the film is a minefield when it comes to documentary responsibility.

As I said in my review of You Can See Everything, "This is not a film about Theranos. It’s barely even a film about Elizabeth Holmes ... It is instead a documentary about Nathan Fielder’s relationship with subjectivity." That relationship seems abusive. www.austinchronicle.com/screens/film...

Gibney puts the pieces together in a way that will make the Musk cultists start to think about him as an immediate danger. Abbasi shows Trump's weakness and vicious cruelty in scenes that will make Trump voters deeply uncomfortable.

There's a phenomenal moment in the very underrated crypto con documentary Everyone is Lying to You For Money. Ben McKenzie is interviewing Sam Bankman-Fried, and there's a constant rustling sound. If you've spent time around tech bros, you know what it is. It's the sound of constant leg jiggle.

If someone takes offense to Obama's Cheesecake Factory joke, mute/block/ignore. This is basket of deplorables all over again.

The former head of CLEAT, the biggest police union in Texas and a reliably pro-Republican block vote, just said he's voting for Talarico over Paxton. This is genuinely unprecedented.

What better way to kick off Halloween season than a chat with two living horror legends? Brez and Vespe welcome Night of the Living Dead's Judith O'Dea and Russ Streiner and talk about the legacy of that film, Romero, and their favorite @stephenking.bsky.social stories.

A metaphor with so many layers it needs elevators.

The Cinema Museum in London is trying to buy its building and they are about 1/4 of the way to their goal. It's a converted Victorian workhouse where Charlie Chaplin lived and worked as a child. Could you share or donate a bit? www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/the-cinema...

If you're saying You Can See Everything is the best film.of the year (which it isn't) then you're saying it's a better documentary than Naza and that's so clearly nonsense that I don't know where to start.

Wildwood is a masterpiece that pushes stop motion animation to new and wondrous places, all in service of a touching and thrilling story. The best animated film of the year.

I don't do much Oscar talk, but if this loses best animation it will be the most discrediting loss to a category since Koyaanisqatsi was snubbed in 1983 in favor of Just Another Missing Kid, which shouldn't even have been eligible because it was released in the wrong year.

There's a cadre of Republicans who, while undeniably ghouls, really hate a large chunk of their party that seem like their allies. They know people like Nate Sheets, Bo French, and Ken Paxton better than anyone, and loathe them.
