Great reporting from @robinbisson.bsky.social on an absolutely dire funding situation…

In our recent issue we interview Susana Coelho, who uses brown algae to study evolution, development, and life-cycle complexity at the Max Planck Institute for Biology. Read the Q&A to find out more about Susana’s most important scientific influences: www.cell.com/current-biol...

I get extraordinarily depressed by the standards of reasoning used in my field. Circular arguments everywhere. Bald statements that are plainly fallacious. Dominant active mutations used to prove something is "key". Knockouts of A used as evidence that A "controls" B. What to do? It's everywhere...

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

Showing passers-by the eclipse projected down 2x poster tubes into a slide box. Once we got past "who are these mad scientists with contraptions made from cardboard boxes and tinfoil" we had lots of takes! Especially kids. Science is always cool.

Dear fellow researchers. I think we need to discuss this: www.newscientist.com/article/2532... While peer review is flawed, and while preprints are a great way to share data before publication, as a community we mustn’t trade rigour for hype. This paper was peer reviewed and rejected.

How do you track thousands of cells in complex systems, in 3D & over time? We are launching a Kaggle challenge to push the frontier of AI-powered cell tracking, building on advances like Ultrack & the DaXi lightsheet microscope from the @loicaroyer.bsky.social lab. bit.ly/4bfdzWE

In common with all simple metrics of complex outcomes, it can obviously be gamed. It obviously _will_ be gamed if anyone cares. The only way it won't be gamed is if it's ignored. I hope it is not gamed.

If only it was presented as "here are some papers our algorithm thought might interest you!", I'd totally agree. Actually, a couple of the preprints I looked at when checking it out are bangers & I'm glad they were pointed out. But "the best"? The "most compelling"? The "1%"? Don't people learn?

It neglects that "the best" science is never, *ever* a single parameter. It neglects that science is a rapidly-evolving concept, the way it is published changes by the year, and the definition of success only exists in long hindsight. Above all it neglects that science is a human construct.

As usual, Current Biology is by some way the most interesting table of contents to read among general biology journals. Chapeau.

I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇

Didn't you listen to the man? He told you! "adjustment to clarify for presentation purposes"...

My PO said I had to fill out this form for 3 of my papers for the RPPR of my NIGMS MIRA grant in February, or I could not include them in my progress report. It looks like things have gotten even worse since then.

Reptiles with longer Wikipedia pages tend to be bigger. The relationship is a power law with exponent = 0.85. I guess humans really like writing about big lizards? The longest article is the Komodo Dragon.

The @anthropic opus science skills in Claude are rendered, basically, completely useless by the overzealous guardrails. For a system that wants to persuade people it's smart, it's staggeringly dumb.
