One of the most upsetting things for people trained in formal computational theory, who are not AI boosters, to witness is how claims about the outputs of systems with no formal specification are taken as if they are indicative of formally linked capacities, such as the ability to add; see thread:

> That they can do this with reasonable accuracy does seem to eliminate one possible candidate algorithm by which they add: regurgitation. False. It's your cognition that picks out right answers from wrong ones (in the calculator case too). The way (and the only one we know of formally proving it)

The world’s smallest CT scanner now fits in one hand. Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.

Alaska Public Media@alaskapublic.org

Meet Backpack, your 2026 Fat Bear Week champion. Backpack is 20 years old, weighs about 1,000 pounds and got his nickname because, as a cub, he loved riding on his mom's back across the Brooks River.

Perfectly intuitive, a working camera can only record an action, it cannot prevent it from happening any more than a dummy camera can…. A working camera can also show the viewer things that may look nefarious without context and increase the suspicion of others.

‘We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.’ This is a CEO openly confessing to a level of acquired mental indolence that, were he not coddled 24/7 by an army of paid underlings, would make him incapable of living independently and feeding himself. He’s fine with it. Your kids won’t be.

It seems like this is a good time to tell you all why LLMs are never, and can never be, conscious.

Laura Jedeed@laurajedeed.bsky.social

Are AI companies being extremely irresponsible with incomplete and badly defined parameters for their LLMs? Yes! Are they unwittingly creating Skynet? No. Grow up. Come on

An interesting point to be made here is that Capital goods inflation can be driven by rate expectations. If a business expects interest rates to increase they may pull forward CapEx; leading to an increase in demand for Capital goods; leading to an increase in the price of Capital goods.

Mike Johnson never has had any moral center. He has no love for any part of the Bible that doesn't include stoning. And Herrera is the R trying to replace the guy who cheated on his wife with a staffer he drove to suicide. This is who the GOP is.

HOLY SHIT - Tapper plays Johnson footage of GOP candidate Brandon Herrera describing moms as "cum trophies," mentions he called Nazi machine guns "the original ghetto blasters," & asks Johnson how he can support him. Mike says "he has run a very effective campaign ... that was his persona online"

Anyway yeah I know the prose is dire in sections, I've been staring at this thing in a series of Ubud cafes while being, like, man, I really would rather be focusing on weird Rustlang/Haskell stuff.

At a certain point I would expect people to understand what is being said…. Vance et al are saying what THEY are doing and what the goal is…. Vance et al benefit upon the destruction of the very things that created the prosperity of America.
