this piece is excellently written and infuriating

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

Just as a private equity firm buys out a corporation and strips it for parts, a consultant class is raiding the Democratic Party and getting “generationally wealthy” along the way New from me and @adambonica.bsky.social newrepublic.com/article/2163...

With AI, fixating on apocalyptic scenarios ignores real-world problems involving the actually already existing AI. We have proven methods to address disruptive technology, but for anyone who opposes them, apocalyptic fantasies can be a useful distraction. My latest, in @liberalcurrents.com:

liberalcurrents.comThe Plausible Techno-Dystopian FutureThe problems caused by AI development are widespread and multiplying, but none involves a digital demon that kills us all.

We used to have a federal survey that measured hunger in America, but the Trump administration stopped conducting the survey right after the bill that cut food assistance was passed.

Bobby Kogan@bbkogan.bsky.social

We are seeing a hunger disaster unrolling before our eyes. Since Republicans passed the Big Beautiful Bill, 2 million kids have lost food assistance. These are by far the deepest SNAP cuts in history, and each month, we find out it’s even worse than we thought. The worst is yet to come.

Do you know how bad the abuse has to be for a judge to remove kids from their birth mother? Just saw Amy Acton’s CNN interview about that Ramaswamy ad and , listen, I lived in NC through the Willie Horton ad era. I’m not precious. This is so disgusting that I wish I believed in hell. I really do.

this sign also captures why oligarchs are almost inherently hostile to democracy, they really hate not being Everyone's Boss All the Time

🔥 MEMPHIS to the city council: “YOU WORK FOR US NOT ELON MUSK” What a pic. (H/T councilman @jbsmileyjr.bsky.social — who voted for the moratorium, which failed 6-6)

this is what I like to see from political leaders, putting it on the line and using their visibility and their power as a lever to raise up those whose vulnerability denies them visibility and power of their own

I’ve been released from IDF custody with a “warning,” apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn’t even a congressmember yet, just a nominee). But several dozen rabbis & participants harvesting olives with me are still in detention.

KetAnthropic JoshAI@ketanjoshi.co

Anthropic frantically and mindlessly speed-building massive new polluting fossil fuel infrastructure but then also buying carbon removal offsets to "help address emissions" is such as perfect demonstration of why silicon valley has failed so spectacularly to actually help tackle climate change.

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

This feels like the outcome devised to ensue from floating the talking point of the moment a month or so ago about “Well at least the robber barons were PHILANTHROPISTS” which made them good and important to American society. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

leiterreports.comDOJ threatens antitrust investigation unless ABA loosens rules on how much of the curriculum (including 1L curriculum) adjuncts can teachStory here. Adjuncts are obviously cheaper, but that’s because most are practicing law full-time. How that would affect their availability to 1L students is obviously a serious concern.
Tobias Wilson-Bates@phdhurtbrain.bsky.social

Alongside the decades-long gutting of institutional funding, I believe part of what has happened is the system-wide pressures to de-skill and modularize core curriculum so that the foundational courses are taught by the cheapest, largest, and least-protected population of instructors.

Andy Stone runs Comms at Meta. If you believe this, I have a Straight of Hormuz to sell ya. No, really, I *totally* own it. They took the whole account down and then upon restoring took 4 hours to actually allow owners access to post, while said owners were in constant touch demanding access.

I’m sorry to have to be the bad guy here but we need to recognize that we live in a compressed air thrusters world now. If you’re not finding ways to teach the critical use of compressed air thrusters in your classroom, you’re setting your students up to fail when you could be setting them up to fly

Many, many workers and communities organizing for a better tech future are not in the rich coastal cities. They deserve to be spoken with, not simply *about* in the pages and podcasts of NY and SF. It's a wide world out here friends!

I'm a longtime friend of @ainowinstitute.bsky.social but kinda bummed at the lineup for the People's AI Assembly tbh. It includes many people I really like! But Keshaun Pearson is the *only* speaker so far bringing a non-SF or NY perspective from a community directly impacted by data centers.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

for reference, in the Dobbs opinion, Alito was like, women generally don't _plan_ to get an abortion, so how could they have a reliance interest in abortion? which is kind of an extension of 'you want health insurance? what, you plan on being sick?'

Marty Lederman@martylederman.bsky.social

Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests. Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade. Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.

Meet Backpack, your 2026 Fat Bear Week champion. Backpack is 20 years old, weighs about 1,000 pounds and got his nickname because, as a cub, he loved riding on his mom's back across the Brooks River.

the @forbidden-stories.bsky.social investigation is so deeply important. put the illegality to one side. the trump admin is brazenly sending ppl to third countries, lacking any cxn, without any guarantee they won't be sent on for torture, abuse, persecution... it's horrible.

today, SCOTUS essentially agreed that willful violations of the 1974 Privacy Act the Social Security Act, and the Administrative Procedure Act, resulting in the transfer of sensitive SSA data on basically every American, is fine...as long as you're handing that data off to ICE
