I subscribed to the Touch Grass feed to see pleasant photos people people take while going for walks. A surprising number of posts are from fat dudes walking naked.

As we settle into the new house I've been putting a lot of stuff out by the kerb for people to take. Yesterday someone took one of our bags of leaves.

Wow, you mean a crow could choose paint colours for our new house in just one month?

A fellow of the @royalsociety.org harnessing science in the service of inhumanity. More people are dying in Ukraine thanks to his actions. But I guess that’s still somehow not in violation of their code of conduct.

The real outcome of the Alberta referendum is "we'll stay in Canada but we FUCKING HATE IMMIGRANTS and we have a mandate to make their lives miserable, try to stop us and we'll have another hissy fit." I can't celebrate that.

What time should it be? Most of western Canada is doing away with the twice-yearly time change and moving to permanent daylight saving time, but permanent standard time would be better for our health. By me in @chco-tv.bsky.social chco.tv/column-what-...

Torrential rain in St Andrews tonight but that didn't keep the crowds away from Indulge Food & Wine Festival

This reminds me of being a cub reporter and seeking out evening events where there would be canapes so I could get a free dinner. One guy from a government science funding agency used to tease me about it whenever we crossed paths.

Chef Will Thornton at William & Water is serving up invasive European green crabs. He may be the first chef in Canada to do so. I was at a conference in Portland, Maine earlier this year where they discussed how to build a culinary market for crabs.

Every accusation is a confession with these guys.

So...a country with a deserves-to-be-overthrown government and diesel shortages so bad that vehicles line up for miles has agreed to sell diesel to another country with a deserves-to-be-overthrown governemnt with diesel shortages? Is that what I am hearing?

As of today, our new newspaper about research, higher education and industrial strategy has a name - and a purpose. Going live 1 January.

This might be my favourite anatomically incorrect Halloween skeleton yet...a chicken with skeletal feathers and coxcomb!

This is according to John Williamson, the local MP. Campobello is a Canadian island only accessible by road from Maine. A seasonal ferry is about to go out of service for the winter.

After yet again leaving a bunch of junk, including an old wooden cabinet, out with my trash and having it disappear without complaint I just have to say: the St Stephen garbage collectors kick ass.

Dear local business owners: a Facebook page is not a website. Repeat: a Facebook page is not a website. Ugh.

When we were tearing down the rickety garage at our old house this summer I found a rusty old axe head I was going to throw away. But my father in law took it and yesterday returned it all cleaned up with a new handle he crafted. Now I wanna chop some stuff!

This guy, who flies this ultralight most evenings over St Stephen all summer, is kind of a life goal for me.

And we're back in McAdam. Most of the passengers are sticking around for a roast beef dinner, but I'm heading home. That was an interesting day at work!

The Scott family from Sussex, and their German foreign exchange student, we're excited to score tickets, especially daughter Evelyn, whose favourite movie is The Polar Express.

We have arrived in St. Stephen, where the train engine is being switched to the other end for the return journey. I am a few hundred metres from my house, but my car is in McAdam. So there's another few hours of train riding to go.

Brief window of cell service for an update. Bill Young, a train aficionado from St Stephen, is on ticket inspector duty. On a much larger train than the model ones he builds.

A sudden stop in Watt Junction, where we were accosted by train robbers! They made off with a box of Ganong chocolates before being apprehended by Sheriff Bob

There's still one lighthouse on Canada's east coast that has human keepers, on Machias Seal Island. But the job is less "lighthouse keeper" and more "human flagpole". Because the island is claimed by both Canada and the US, and we send keepers there as a demonstration of sovereignty.

I found out lighthouses are automated now. We're really running out of places to be weird hermits
