3-year degrees don’t solve the problem of affordability of college and don’t consider the neuroscience & cumulative effect of learning. That’s why @aaup.org President @proftwolf.bsky.social & I came out against these degrees in June. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

that's real weird because there were Maine Indivisible groups in your office every single day during the Kavanaugh confirmation repeatedly telling you he was going to do exactly that

The implicit messages we get about neutralizing emotion in our scholarship (even when writing about deeply emotional events) has always bothered me. Ruth Behar's 'Anthropology that breaks your heart' (1996) is a classic, but it's well past time to revive the conversation. Can't wait to read this.
I just came back from a talk about this book. It's a genre-breaking braided academic narrative about horrific fires as a result of flamable pjs, the death of the author's daughter, and the meaning of a "life" - which is to say the history of the curriculum vitae. press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...

Bobby Jindal. Vivek Ramaswamy. Whatcha doin bros? Smh.
Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

Good! This “study” is 💯 dangerous! “The study would deny hepatitis B vaccines to 7,000 newborns in the first six weeks of life, in a country where about one in five adults have the virus. Newborns are particularly vulnerable – but vaccination within 24 hours of birth is safe and highly effective.”

On average, scientists find many readers comprehend and recall slightly less information than when reading the exact same text on paper. But e-readers can be easier to bring on the go. Michael J. Coren weighs the pros and cons: https://wapo.st/4s9LNSR

Absolutely horrifying. My heart is with the Hindu community in the wake of this news, and I'm grateful to the heroes at the Mount Prospect and Palatine Police Departments who helped prevent an unthinkable tragedy. White supremacy and hate have no place in our nation. www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news...

Periodic reminder that the biggest scandal in American history outside of Watergate involved a grand total of $9 million (inflation adjusted) changing hands & it resulted in resignations, convictions, jail time, and new legislation, and in the Trump administration that amount is a rounding error
Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate...then were told to lay off. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Another dimension of this: the Gaza genocide can only be properly and fully understood as a joint venture between the far right Netanyahu government and its centrist enablers in Washington, primarily, but also in London, Berlin and elsewhere.
"Many people prefer to believe the brutes and the sadists are responsible, largely because they are not like 'us,'" writes @omerbartov.bsky.social. "But modern genocide is the product of the technocrats, bureaucrats and cold planners of extermination, who don’t get their hands dirty."

a lot of people are replying with 'what are you going to do about it,' and while every level of government could do more, the powers the *DC City Council* has in this situation are comparatively limited. This isn't just voter intimidation, but an argument for statehood for the District of Columbia.

What the (re t’s meltdown)
Aside from the obvious about how he’s psychotic, the only reason it’s constitutional for any POTUS to accept the peace prize is because the Nobel foundation is not part of the government of Norway as such. Otherwise it’d be a forbidden foreign emolument. Obama asked for an OLC opinion on this point.

Modi the fascist is scared shitless of people in India, even as he constantly evokes “The People of India” as his rationale for ruling over them. Beware nationalism. It is a lie about who “we” are and are not, one that leads directly and inevitably to fascism.

Selecting Pillay, I imagine, is a way to underscore the value of defending human rights in an increasingly regressive, repressive world
