If you've ever been lounging around the house and thought "I would like to offload some of my money, and give it to someone handsome and charming, ideally in exchange for many lovely charts", I have solved this problem for you:

Micah McCurdy@hockeyviz.com

One wonderful thing you can do with your money is give some of it to me every month, by subscribing to my frankly excellent website, hockeyviz.com/subscribe. This is wonderful in two ways, because I get your money and you get beautiful understanding of hockey. This thread has some details!

My god. A Virginia data center ran backup diesel generators full blast for 24 hours, creating a giant cloud of toxic smoke that choked its human neighbors. The government claimed there was nothing they could do.

For the start of the NHL season, I have relaunched my #hockey stats site hockeybytes.com. With the help of #Claude and #Gemini, I’ve been able to design and build out a more maintainable backend architecture while also being able to focus my energies on an improved frontend and product experience.

The amount of Amazon workers relying on SNAP and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020. — while Amazon’s annual profits soared by over 550%. It’s the same story everywhere: corporate profits are at record highs, while workers’ share of the economy is at a record low. We must unrig the system.

Here is my fully documented HTML boilerplate. It is a lean, minimal and solid foundation I use across the sites I develop. Written mostly for me, because I'm sure to forget why I've done things the way I have, but I hope it is of use to you too. vale.rocks/posts/html-b... #HTML #WebDev

It’s easy to pencil David Carle into every NHL job opening, but not every NCAA is racing to the big leagues. The NCAA may be a deep pipeline for players, but it’s pretty untapped on the coaching side. More here, free to read www.nytimes.com/athletic/733...

Just attended a lovely talk where a product went from 6.6 seconds to 0.8 seconds for first contentful paint by ditching MUI and CSS-in-JS and using vanilla CSS with in-house components instead. #webexpo

Nice analysis of the climate costs of Chrome pushing a 4GB Geminin nano to people's devices. Even just looking purely at the download (ignoring inference, re-downloads etc) it's substantial (not sure it's 'insane'), and shows the Google is just kinda doing stuff pretty thoughtlessly

People posting AI-generated CSS saying they're "pretty pleased" with it and I could get the exact same result with 5% of the amount of code, maybe even less... Because, you know, the AI code is setting the exact same property on the exact same damn element to the same damn value 7×7 = 49 times...

#tinyCSStip Sometimes, if you notice a teeny tiny misalignment and you cannot understand why because *nothing* in your CSS looks like it could have caused it... try using `round()` to round to an integer number of pixels. It just solved my own tiny misalignment problem that was driving me batty. 🦇

This was a really great read. Highly recommended! gbbns.co/journal/acce... The EAA has made it difficult to ignore #a11y issues. But the fix hasn't been what it needs to be. The solution is treating frontend as a speciality again. AI still can't replace human knowledge, and can break things faster.

gbbns.coThe Accessibility Problem Isn't Design. It's Engineering. | gbbns.coAccessibility failures aren't design oversights — they're engineering failures. The full-stack hiring trend, AI-generated code with no context, and a compliance-first mentality have combined to create a crisis hiding in plain sight. Here's what's actually going wrong, and what fixing it actually looks like.

Listening to the #Artemis crew describe their moon observations to the #NASA science team and I’m enthralled by the detail in their descriptions.

Obviously the moon is the star of the show but another thing that really fascinates me is watching the #Artemis #astronauts and ground crew work throughout their mission. #nasa

Good advice in this article about managing AI workloads and (potentially only) using AI for automating mundane tasks. I think we're learning that the limititation is not the number of tokens, it's your 40-watt brain at the end of the pipeline responsible for understanding the output.
