I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

Half of student loan fraud is associated with for-profit franchises although only 10% of students are taught by franchises. Do the maths. Don't penalise universities if graduates don't go into good jobs when the labour market lacks sufficient good jobs for them to go into.

If there are only "pockets of poor provision" why doesn't OfS just focus on the pockets? One in 10 students are now taught by a for-profit franchise; students taught on these programmes have worse outcomes than students on the universities validating the franchise degrees. Focus on franchising.

It was apparent to everyone that releasing people from hospital into care homes would be a disaster.. & so it proved. #wato

Hard to overstate how much Hegseth's execution stream mirrors the U.S. military's traditional description of ISIS propaganda: broadcast killings designed to send a message, strike fear and create a social media spectacle. Will almost certainly be repurposed by online terror cells

Intrigued to see the Conservative conference will feature a speech on "press freedom" next week while they ban lobby journalists such as @josiahmortimer.bsky.social from attending their conference.

Adam Bienkov@adambienkov.bsky.social

Kemi Badenoch condemned Reform's ban on critical journalists covering their conference as "authoritarian", saying her own party would never do the same as "we believe in free speech. We believe in a free press." Now the Conservatives have banned Byline Times from their conference

WOAH. Of course. Conscious existence isn’t an endpoint, a peak, a pinnacle, a god given gift. It’s a workaround, a bodge, a fudge, the best we could manage. That’s why Darwin broke humankind’s brain. We’ve not really recovered, I don’t think. Our lived reality is a will-this-do?

Universities cannot expect researchers to take risks if they are repeatedly at risk of redundancy while losing professional services support, grappling with the gratuitous vagaries of home and international student number swings and both teaching and assessing in an age of unregulated AI.
