The big declines are from bad incidents, the smaller bumps up are from Waymo marketing campaigns. The downward trend reflects how the reality falls short of promises. Politicians and regulators decide whether, where, and how AVs operate and they are much more amenable to Waymo's $$$$$$ persuasion.

David Zipper@davidzipper.bsky.social

YouGov finds that more Americans have heard about Waymo, but the company’s reputation is net negative. “The data suggests that growing familiarity is not necessarily translating into more favourable perceptions of the brand.” yougov.com/en-us/articl...

after the early 2000s, tech journalists realized that if you breathlessly pretend every major device release is revolutionary, you’ll never again get caught thinking the general public wanted a blackberry instead of an iphone

But, yeah, if what falls on our sensory surfaces is "information" that's a really strong claim — it's good for scientists to say what model, formalisms, theories they use, but it's slightly different to see it outside a direct quote as if "information" is a neutral word like "thing" or a phenomenon.

It's always interesting to see journalists reflect the information theory metaphor on topics like this where it slips into scientific model... > crows and primates are processing the same information

And to go back to Lance Nizami's point... Yeah... There's something that doesn't make sense if you just try to plop information theory unceremoniously onto the neuroscientific world. Full PDF available: philarchive.org/rec/NIZITI

The problem with this if somebody (not saying the authors or even the journalist, but many do) takes this as a serious model is that it violates some important aspects of engineered systems required for information theory. Perhaps addressible like in quote above, but not easy nor always.

A lot of people who think of themselves as progressives are actually creepy reactionary types who don’t understand politics beyond some sort of self-cleansing ritual. If a political movement is successful, they assume they must have been purified enough to deserve it.

They absolutely did the equivalent of that, fhat was the whole point. It wasn’t an act of Calvinist penance, it was meant to force people to look and make it impossible for news media to ignore

oh good, nginx too https://www.csoonline.com/article/4237420/f5-rushes-out-emergency-nginx-patches-for-three-critical-flaws.html

csoonline.comF5 rushes out emergency NGINX patches for three critical flawsF5 is once again disclosing cybersecurity flaws in its core offerings. The app delivery and security provider has released out-of-band (OOB) security patches that address multiple flaws in NGINX, its high-performance software that controls digital traffic for websites. These include three critical-severity flaws that could allow attackers to crash systems, execute code, and launch denial of service (DoS) attacks. OOB security patches are emergency software updates released outside of normal maintenance cycles. CVE-2026-15176, CVE-2026-97205, and CVE-2026-93479 are rated 9.2 in severity in the latest version (4.0) of the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS). Impacted software products include NGINX Plus, NGINX Open Source, NGINX Ingress Controller, NGINX Gateway Fabric, and NGINX Instance Manager. While F5 says it hasn’t discovered evidence that these issues are being exploited in the wild, it advises customers to install or upgrade to fixed versions. Analysts agree. “NGINX is the front door: Reverse proxy, load balancer, and Kubernetes ingress,” said Frank Dickson of Dickson Research, noting that transport layer security (TLS) usually terminates in NGINX. “Code execution on that box means seeing passwords, session cookies, and API tokens in the clear, plus the private keys that make it all trustworthy.” ## Allowing attackers to crash systems CVE-2026-15176 and CVE-2026-97205 are _ngx_http_core_module_ vulnerabilities in F5’s NGINX, which could cause a heap buffer overflow in the server’s worker process. This type of memory corruption could lead to a system crashing or restarting, thus giving attackers access. Threat actors could also execute code on systems where Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), a technique intended to prevent exploitation by randomly arranging memory locations when an app starts, is disabled, or bypass ASLR altogether. The flaws could allow attackers to launch DoS attacks to make the server inaccessible to legitimate users, F5 explained. CVE-2026-93479 is similar, in that it is a map directive flaw that could allow attackers to send crafted HTTP requests to cause a heap buffer overflow; they can also execute code when ASLR is disabled, or bypass it. These vulnerabilities follow F5’s disclosure of CVE-2026-42530 in June. The flaw in _ngx_http_v3_module_ in NGINX Open Source could also potentially allow remote attackers to cause DoS or trigger code execution. Customers can mitigate CVE-2026-15176 by avoiding use of the _$request_filename_ variable and the _alias_ directive in a location block, F5 said, and CVE-2026-97205 can be mitigated by disabling asynchronous file I/O (AIO) and Server Side Includes (SSI). Meanwhile, F5 advised mitigating CVE-2026-93479 by avoiding unnamed captures and instead using named captures and limiting their usage to the block with the regex match. But, noted Seva Ioussoufovitch, senior research analyst at Infotech, “since NGINX is used across a wide swath of systems, this may increase the risk of service availability loss for many enterprises.” ## The latest in a series of cybersecurity issues While these three vulnerabilities are not known to be exploited in the wild, F5 has repeatedly borne the brunt of cyberattacks in recent years, which is troubling because the cybersecurity and app delivery networking (ADN) company serves tens of thousands of customers, including 80% of the Fortune 500, analysts noted. Threat actors have repeatedly targeted flaws in its systems and products to map internal servers, hijack devices, breach systems, steal sensitive documents, and deploy data-wiping malware. Over the last five years, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has flagged eight actively-exploited F5 vulnerabilities; four of these have been targeted in ransomware attacks. For instance, a 2025 nation-state breach and CISA’s Emergency Directive 26-01 centered on F5’s BIG-IP, and F5 said at the time that NGINX source code was not accessed. But, Dickson noted, NGINX’s own “warning shot” came in May when CVE-2026-42945, a rewrite module overflow nicknamed NGINX Rift, arrived with a public remote code execution proof of concept. “This week’s alias and rewrite flaw lives in the same neighborhood,” he said, pointing out, “attackers read changelogs, too.” ## Mitigation Ioussoufovitch noted that the flaws are configuration-dependent, so enterprises should begin with an audit of current NGINX configurations to help risk-prioritize this patch. F5 also said that the risk of remote code execution (RCE) notably increases when ASLR is disabled, so users should double-check that ASLR and other typical OS-level protections are proactively enabled to at least limit the exploitation risk from similar types of attack. Enterprises need to ensure they have a clear inventory of which of their systems are running NGINX, including those where it is embedded in other products. This is critical to supporting configuration audits, segmentation efforts, and NGINX worker monitoring efforts, which can indicate that attackers “are poking at these types of vulnerabilities,” Ioussoufovitch said. “NGINX has already had multiple security releases this year, and I expect the trend to continue well into the future,” he noted. Dickson agreed that inventorying is the first step. NGINX “hides inside” ingress controllers, appliances, and container images. Many teams get NGINX from their Linux distribution, not nginx.org, and Amazon Linux still lists the AIO fix as pending. “A fix on the vendor’s site does not patch your servers,” he cautioned. As well as performing the inventory, enterprises should search their configurations for aliases paired with rewrite, AIO paired with SSI, and map blocks using unnamed regex captures. If an organization cannot patch today, the workarounds are simple, Dickson said: Disable AIO or stop serving SSI pages; switch map to named captures; confirm ASLR is on, run workers unprivileged; and segment the front door so it cannot reach the crown jewels. And, watch for worker processes that keep restarting. “These flaws need the right configuration to bite, and that is the good news,” Dickson said. “The bad news is that many organizations may not know what their NGINX configurations actually say.”

it would be cool if this outcome got the same amount of coverage as the anti-trans ads that caused it. would be cool if the people impacted by political rhetoric were treated with as much care and attention as those pushing it receive

New: OutYouth, an LGBTQ+ youth program in Austin, says it's briefly closing for safety reasons because it was mentioned in the fake trans resource guide pamphlets that went out this week across Texas - www.chron.com/culture/arti...

The state's concentration of police attention on protesters obviously makes looting more likely. If all the cops are containing the protest there's no one guarding the storefronts. Hard not to think of this as a strategy against left-wing protests.

People in countries with racialized class systems always act shocked when the deprived racialized underclass seizes opportunities to take the things that their society presents as unparalleled and unqualified goods, which they're systematically deprived from having.

I mean the yokels of course, not the elites. The elites seem to know that it scares the yokel and just let it happen and publicize it widely to discredit the protests. They're doing what US governments did in 2020 to discredit the movement against police brutality.

Poland was already independent but their withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact and the destruction of the socialist welfare state was accomplished through CIA operations. Indian independence was bloody, so was the abolition of apartheid.

Sandy Hendry@sandyhendry.bsky.social

Martin Luther King was much more successful than Malcolm X for example. Before that, there was no need for a bloody civil war in most countries that abolished slavery. Just votes. Independence can also be bloodless. Gandhi in India, Walesa in Poland, Mandela in South Africa. The list is long.

The increasingly open pedophilia and pedophilia apologia among the American right is honestly shocking. We always knew it was there but now it’s explicitly part of the brand. In the political ads and everything

Amy Acton’s mother married a pedophile who abused her daughter, and her daughter’s testimony put him in prison. Her defense of her new husband over her daughter is what lost her custody of Acton. So when she says in Ramaswamy’s ad that Acton is a liar, she is referring to her kid’s brave testimony.

the idea that it is the role of the government to legislate what people jack off to is so deranged. like, not ensuring safe working conditions for people in porn, but essentially saying "these are sexual fantasies the uk govt says you aren't supposed to have"

There's a mayoral candidate in Shreveport who obviously has a long history of starting fires for political purposes and I mean literal actual fires and also he's the front runner.

One of the funniest things on the campaign trail has been talking to well-to-do white people who constantly complain about how shitty everything is and then respond to "would you support higher property taxes if it meant solving those problems" with a flat "no"

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Pretty much all the taxes in place were put there by Greatest Generation types who had civic pride or at least some sense of duty to some type of society and they're being demolished by their spoiled rotten baby boomer children.
