A longform piece I did on the conversion of rainforests in Liberia into cacao plantations, the economic incentives driving it, and an upcoming collision with EU rules that it’s going to provoke.

Mongabay@mongabay.com

A "cocoa rush" in Liberia’s remote southeast is driving a major deforestation crisis. Tens of thousands of migrant workers from Côte d’Ivoire are clearing West Africa’s last remaining rainforests for cocoa plantations, pushing Grand Gedeh county to record forest loss. @shokes.bsky.social reports.

i read east of eden on a whim last year and somehow it seems like everyone did too? and now theres a netflix series?? did we all tap into the universal steinbeck consciousness somehow?

The prediction I'm most confident about right now is that the anti-elite sentiment across western societies is going to shift towards the tech industry and it's going to be very, very intense. I think a lot of them expect this too.

The two likeliest scenarios for the rise of AI are: a financial crash, or mass job displacement. That's not even accounting for the possibility of some incident with unaligned models causing havoc somewhere. Anger at Silicon Valley is going to transcend partisanship at that point.

[Commentary] The idea that we must massively scale up mining for the clean energy transition is false, scholar Shaan Sood argues in an op-ed. Most "critical minerals" are actually used in industries unrelated to, or opposed to, clean energy, while extraction causes widespread harm.

Hard to call it a "stain on the soul" when it's looking more like a verdict. This period isn't going to get washed away by an election or two, something has turned very rotten in America.

These people had protected status. They lived here legally. They worked, they paid taxes. They made lives. Raised families. Now we’ve dehumanized them. Ripped away that protection and told them to get out. This is a stain on the soul of this Nation.

The people who authored this post are nihilists. They will claim and pretend that they have a positive vision of white resurrection and destiny, but it's a mask. They've discovered the thrill of sadism and built a politics that revolves around it.

I believe the catalyst for this very dramatic historical turn - and that's what it is - is the rise of social media. It's not coincidence these men's suffering is being turned into content, that's actually the purpose of the policy. This technology has destroyed our societies.
