There can be enormous power in calling things what they are. Sometimes one person in a position to name something for everyone else can clarify things enormously.

It’s fairly clear most people don’t appreciate the escalation in language, so here’s a comparison of when AG Bonta went for the mat for trans kids and refused to let a hate group dress up theirs as anything other than discrimination. 2023. Notice the framing difference compared to today’s ballots.

new rule: if a university denied someone tenure, or let them go because it canceled their classes, or has shut down the department or program they used to teach in, that university's PR department forfeits the right to put out a celebratory statement when that person wins a Nobel

Apparently people are sharing this far and wide on social media, which I think is horrible. This could cripple ICE operations. PLEASE do not share this.

Over 800 wildfires are burning across Canada right now. Canada also holds more than a quarter of the world's boreal forest and is warming at twice the global average rate. The smoke is the part getting attention. Here is everything else. 🧵

This is getting much more serious. Please limit your time outdoors please stay informed about the wildfire smoke and where it is headed. SHARE THIS MAP. I have such a bad headache and we live in one of the black spots. It's BARELY begun, here. I don't know what we are gonna do on Friday. 🥲

Today we celebrate the PDFing of "Declaration FINAL v3 USE THIS ONE - SIGNED.docx" (Jefferson's draft was heavily edited by the Committee, then again by Congress, and he was big mad about it.)

I don't know who needs to know this, but having just learned there's places ACs are illegal for bs reasons: if you have a working fireplace, you theoretically could vent the waste heat of a portable AC out the chimney. That's what it's for, after all. Make sure the flue is open.

I assigned random gender/ethnicity labels to scientific abstracts from the literature and then asked Claude to do a thematic analysis. Claude identified a clinical versus computational split for female/male authors and a DEI focus for Black/URM authors. All in completely random data.

The odds are better than normal that whoever's on the ballot as the Democrat in your district this November will win. So it's important this primary season to make sure that whoever that person is, they're committed to an aggressive agenda of reform and accountability once they take office.

Dems are polling crazy high based on the flaming catastrophe that is Republican fascist rule, so primarying as many of the bad weak complicit Democrats in favor of good determined angry ones has rarely if ever been more crucial

I find this unsettling: A new study in #Lancet shows that the number of faux citations in scientific articles is on the rise, and #AI is likely to blame. @aniloza.bsky.social reports. www.statnews.com/2026/05/07/l...

I'm seeing a lot of liberals stewing over how in his resignation letter, Kent framed Trump as having been deceived. Yall, that's the party norm. See Hawley's NYT OpEd re the OBBB last year. That's just how they do it over there. Cause it's a monarchy.

Or rather you don't *have* to. There's other, often better and more effective ways of manipulating monarchs. Kent doesn't seem to know any of those, hence his recourse to, "Your Majesty, you have been lied to by shadowy forces that don't have your best interests at heart."

The thing about monarchs is that you can't ever tell them they're wrong. You can't tell the king to his face he's an idiot or he'll put your head on a pike. So you have to frame it that the wrong thing he's doing is someone else's fault. Someone you're rescuing him from.

Why the culture of BSky is terrible: Person 1: "Huh, this horrible person doing horrible things is doing them in the a way similar to this other historical horrible person, which is interesting & possibly informative." Persons 2-n: "Oh my god how dare you demand I empathize with a monster?!?!"
