7. Everyone would be better off. Well maybe not everyone. Jensen Huang would certainly have a very big sad. But is that a bug or a feature? I think the course is clear. The labs _need_ their workers to unionize if they want to save their profit model. AI Labs of the world unite! [finis].

My book AGAINST TECH OLIGARCHY, out Sept 15, is available for pre-order at againsttecholigarchy.com. It chronicles the rise of tech workers' activism, how they courageously came together to challenge the industry's most powerful bosses, and how their movement changed Silicon Valley forever. 1/

Peter Brannen@peterbrannen.bsky.social

paperback for The Story of CO2 is the Story of Everything is officially out. It got good reviews and I'm pretty sure it's not like any other climate book you've read. Below is my best attempt to summarize the broad themes of the book. If any of this interests you pls buy so I can continue doing this

So much value: "Samsung's operating profit in the January to March quarter jumped about 750% from a year earlier." So much solidarity: "The union said that 23,000 workers who were making less advanced chips for companies like Tesla and Nvidia should not be left behind." www.bbc.com/news/article...

bbc.comSamsung strike on hold as workers push for AI bonusThe walkout, which was due to start on Thursday, has been suspended while union members vote on a tentative deal.

Few books have made such an impact on my thinking recently as Brannen's "The Story of CO2." Can't wait to discuss with @peterbrannen.bsky.social on March 4th. Come by if you're in Western Mass, and if you're not, go get yourself this book!

A must read paper on how Big Tech uses start-ups from Spain and Brazil to advance their political interests ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡

But given startupsโ€™ economic/technological dependence on Big Tech, it seems unlikely they would ever propose policies that would threaten Big Tech โ€“ because doing so would also threaten their own interests. 10/n

(2) reviving analysis of the *political* character of dependency, this isnโ€™t just about economic relationships or access to certain technologies. Instead, in many contexts, startupsโ€™ ability to even constitute a political actor depends on Big Techโ€™s largesse โ€“ which leads to the 3rd upshot ๐Ÿ‘‡ 7/n

Two detailed case studies (Brazil and Spain) show how Big Tech sponsors startup associations, giving them the resources to lobby national policymakers. I diagnose the Big Tech/startup relationship as patron/client, since the relationship is: - Dyadic - Iterative - Contingent - Hierarchical 4/n

Have you noticed the recent wave of startup policies? See: Argentina, Bahrain, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, India, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand... also in the historical core: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain โ€“ and more! 2/n

Mass's Fair Share Amendment is one of the most successful policies I've seen in the recent past (it increases funding for child care, ed, health, transit by taxing millionaires) But more millionaires is still a huge policy failure www.boston.com/news/local-n...

boston.comReport: Number of millionaires in Mass. has actually gone up since new tax took effectSince the Fair Share Amendment, or the so-called โ€œmillionaires tax,โ€ passed in 2022, Massachusetts has seen an increase in high earners.

I guess I'm actually proud to be so bad at social media that I did this whole thread to promote my article but forgot to post a link. Anyway, the article is open access, and you can find it here: bristoluniversitypressdigital.com/view/journal...
