Stop what you are doing and look at this lovely story. A photography student in the 80s took pictures of punks and mods on the street in Preston. He’s now tracked them down and photographed them again. The pictures and stories are really ❤️ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Important thread on AMOC & evidence Important for those who state AMOC is already collapsing And for those who say there is no evidence it is

Dr. Aaron Thierry@thierryaaron.bsky.social

1/ There’s an instructive debate underway in the open review pages of @egu.eu journal Ocean Science. It’s about whether we can tell if the #AMOC is already on a trajectory towards collapse. What I think it really teaches is how scientists judge evidence, & why that differs from assessing risk. 🧵

Attributing success to a conservation intervention is not as simple as some press releases by conservation bodies would have us believe Solid evidence involves robust study design, such as BACI - Before, After, Control, Impact And well implemented monitoring protocols

You can't clean up plastic once it's in the ocean You can't suck up fossil carbon once it's in the atmosphere You can't (quickly) regrow a forest once you've destroyed it Destruction needs to be addressed at source. It makes no sense to just damage everything and try to fix it afterwards

Fantastic that the government plans to increase tree cover But trees live a long time, and our climate will be very different by the time they mature So do we plant species thriving here now, or species that will thrive in future conditions? It's not a simple question, but we should be asking it!

theguardian.comAs the world gets hotter, could helping trees migrate northwards protect them? With the climate changing, many species are marching towards cooler climes – but trees are being outpaced. Some ecologists say assisted movement is the answer
George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

In terms of messaging, this is very positive, and a big shift from the nature-hatefest of the Starmer administration. Mind you, most tree-planting is unnecessary: I'd like to see much more emphasis on natural regeneration. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

This is how we should see these magnificant animals, not hauled up on a boat or in fillets on a slab. We should no more catch or kill this rare and stunning megafauna than we should trap or kill tigers or whales. Here are some more of Rupert’s photos from yesterday, with his kind permission.
