"Pound for pound" implies Americans are per capita more evil than al Qaeda and I'm going to go out on a limb and say I don't think the average American is worse than the average member of al-Qaeda. (of course he's just misusing the phrase because he thinks it sounds smart)

Woe be it from this recovering opinion writer to bemoan another opinion writer pivoting to hard news reporting, but Douthat going from the opinion pages to 60 Minutes is like Gilderoy Lockhart being asked to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts - you think you're up to it, but you're clearly not

New correspondent Ross Douthat says "no story looms larger than the latest developments in artificial intelligence." The technology and its impacts will be a major focus of 60 Minutes reporting.

Weighing in from Chicago with a blue city fact check: This is today from the heart of the city.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "Look at the blue cities. What do they have in common? They're all dirty. They're filthy dirty. Their streets are dirty. Their streets smell. Their storefronts are broken. Their trees are all gross. Everything about the place is dirty. It's really all of them."

Rep. Max Miller: "My former wife has claimed that during a custody exchange at my home that day, I assaulted her…If I had assaulted her, would she have offered to cook me dinner six days later?"

The details of Ann Widdecombe's murder are too horrific to bear. It's so strange - I spent more than two decades vehemently opposing her, yet I find myself grief-stricken at her passing because whatever our disagreements, it takes courage to be a conviction politician. And that she was

Funding Healey’s defence plan, social care reform and cost of living action while also keeping the fiscal rules is going to mean hefty tax rises.

The only thing I can think is that Mahmood - and the presumed continuance of policies she's executed - is a flanking manoeuvre against Reform? Doesn't bode well for those concerned over Starmer's immigration policies and rhetoric, whatever the reason

Ian Dunt@iandunt.bsky.social

I mean, Mahmood is literally the last person I'd have kept in their role

The Odyssey was pretty great, lads, but not as great as i wanted it to be. Nolan made it a moral tale, which is a hilarious choice for a world where fate, not human choice, governs action on earth. But i do understand why he wants to moralize at this moment in history.

How many translations of the Odyssey did you bring to the theater????

This is a blatantly unconstitutional threat. The executive branch has zero constitutional power to tell states how to run their elections - zero. Nor does DHS have the constitutional power to threaten state and local officials with jail time if they fail to abide by the executive branch’s demands.

Mullin says that election officials in states that don’t cooperate with the Trump administration may face jail time

It can simultaneously be true that the claims are a tired/incoherent rehash, AND it was newsworthy because he said he’s sending the administration in to “work with” states that got hacked. That’s basically announcing interference, or am I missing something?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

My takeaway from that speech is that we are headed down the road of Trump trying to outright rig elections. It probably won't work, but he's going for it.

There is no way that "278,000 noncitizens" are voting in US elections, as Trump claims in his speech. Its just not physically possible, as WIRED and other outlets have consistently reported. This is a scare tactic, and it's working. And the repercussions are endless:

stuff like this is why one important avenue for court reform is just nixing the shadow docket altogether and forcing these people to explain themselves to the public when they issue orders. also, making their records property of the united states and subject to publication when they leave the bench.

Alex Aronson@alexaronson.bsky.social

Amy Coney Barrett just told Congress that it would be inappropriate to explain the reasoning behind the Court’s unreasoned shadow docket orders. As if unreasoned judicial orders are a thing. They are not. The reasoning is the whole point.

Hard to put into words how big of an own-goal it is for the United States to normalize shipping tolls at all, much less tolls at 20%. It's the kind of thing that appeals to someone who has only ever known how to run short-term scams.

Trump: "The USA will be, from this point forward, known as 'THE GUARDIAN OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT,' but as such, and as a matter of FAIRNESS, will be reimbursed, at the rate of 20% on all cargo shipped, for costs necessary to do the job of providing safety and security ... "

Ann Widdecombe's virulent homophobia will be her defining legacy, but even though I'm a gay man I somewhat admired the tenacity of her convictions. She never wavered, no matter what public opinion thought. There's something commendable in that, at least, if not her repugnant views May she rest well

I’m not saying they should or they shouldn’t bankrupt Zuck, but it raises an interesting questions: what happens if Facebook suddenly disappeared? Think of how many small businesses rely on it these days. Is Facebook too big to fail?

Just wanted to share some of my favourite photos I've taken for the Courier since moving to Montana in March. I can't believe I've been running this paper for three months already. Time flies when you're having fun! Love you, Valley County!!!

Well buddy, I've been openly gay since I was a 15-year-old kid in a Kentucky high school in 2001. I'm well aware of "the American context of a society oriented towards bullying and othering as well as its foundational basis in church-sponsored racism" I stand by my words. Born gay. Die mad about it
