if you're running for DSA delegate and the #1 proposal you support is running AOC for President, I am pointing and laughing at you

I have been meaning to write about this for a month or so now but it breaks my heart. AI has infected every hobby. Everything is noise. It's hurting existing communities and trudging through the slop is exhausting.

Aftermath@aftermath.site

Every single hobby I love has has been infected by slopped up and unserious software. It's exhausting. aftermath.site/ai-slop-hobbie...

using it anywhere (yes, even code) is an instant signal to the kind of person you are. the kind of shit you’re willing to sweep under the rug in the name of personal convenience. it’s entirely irrelevant how good AI is at a task

the constant grind of semiotic violence from AI is so fucking exhausting man. read some text that doesn't say anything. look at some images that don't mean anything. here's some code I didn't write and quite possibly haven't run, presented as if it's a solution to a problem

Basically it's just very important to me that if someone burns $56k of diesel to do this, that I not benefit from their actions in any way

I'm a firm believer that the process is the point, even if all you care about is the output. Working through problems is how we develop new solutions. Sleeping on something is insanely important. Using tools to do it for you in a fraction of the time leads to stagnation. This is a real bummer

I've seen a lot of programmers really disrespect themselves thinking that genAI is "fine" when it comes to coding or w/e because it's not "art" Programming is an art. It requires creativity. And you're literally programming graphics, it's visual art. It's just art. It counts. AI coding is AI "art"

its sad but unsurprising how many techies I encounter that are happily using AI in their personal lives, even amongst coworkers who are agitated against the use of AI at work

the various hobby slack channels at work are now a flood of "look at how I used Claude to replace my own hard work on this personal project"

the hard parts are what makes a hobby worthwhile. diving into a rabbithole, getting sidetracked, pulling your hair out trying to perfect some detail that no-one else will see. those are the moments where your own human spirit is suffused into your work. without that, I'm afraid it's just slop

Same people who seem to think it’s bad for China to beat us at AI are perfectly fine with China beating us at high speed rail, solar energy, wind energy, shall we go on

I wrote an essay about why I'm done using AI for coding, even if it costs me my job and career: brettcodes.com/im-done-usin... The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.

brettcodes.comI'm done using AIWhy I'm stopping using AI for coding (and anything else) after using it earnestly for a year and coming to understand the harms it causes on personal, societal, and environmental levels.

if you use ai you should feel shame actually

Anil Dash@anildash.com

The dialogue around LLMs is kind of broken both in terms of critique and advocacy. For critique, we need to focus on how we attack fascist tech power consistently — LLMs are only one part of that; merely saying "AI bad" has simply ended up with a lot of people using AI quietly while feeling shame...

Maybe I'm in the minority here but if people who support AI are being shamed into silence then it's working. The shame is working as intended. The left's biggest problem is that it's afraid to hurt the feelings of folks who need to have their feelings hurt. Let them experience introspection for once

If you have any love of beat em ups that go down real smooth then I'm begging you to play Absolum. It's a self published game with hand drawn art and animation and an insane amount of polish that I would *kill* for some more playable character DLCs

the one-two punch of reading If on a winter’s night a traveler and Invisible Cities back to back at nineteen made me feel both like my mind was literally expanding toward a new understanding of what writing could be and more viscerally annoying to be around than ever before
