Hello! I'm Colin, though you may know me in some online spaces as CoMoo! I make tabletop games, such as For the Badge, Ring-lationship Disc-ord, & You Are a Cat, and You Suck, among others. Check them out, & sign up for my newsletter: sociable-turtle-games.carrd.co
I yap about music & sports too!
Oh right I forgot to do this in so long with all the stuffs happening this year.
But anyway, if you want your work to be known to more people or just have a chance to be reviewed by me, send me your or other's people indie ttrpg works down below!
It's always nice to see what new things there are.
I really enjoyed this post, seeing how an analogue solo game uses real time constraints to simulate the work of caretaking; the point about the dice pool system fitting better than a simpler target number one was really thoughtful too!
Ever wondered whatβs the cost of self-publishing a TTRPG?
I share my experience publishing Echoes of the Veil, as well as sharing financial sheets and useful spreadsheets! I hope this helps.

Started a very productive playtest of my romance story game, Road to Romance last night. We got half way through and hope to pick it up after Metatopia.
Yesterday I visited Drexel to hear a conversation with Bennett Foddy, alongside the exhibit they have on his and other boundary pushing games. It was absolutely invigorating, I feel lucky to have access to these kinds of experiences.
I love games!!!!

I make no claims to allyship, that's not a title I can claim on my own. But I am definitely a white people and PAX's decision that intersectionality is a "nice to have" and not the "must have" it should be, is something all white folks who claim to care should be shouting at them about. Frankly...
I'm continuing to work on my Mothership hack inspired by service work & The Bear, & I am unabashedly stealing strings from Monsterhearts (2) here
Instead of getting strings when you turn someone on, perhaps you earn them when you escalate the situation, making it worse specifically for that person
Perhaps it's entirely flipped; you don't gain strings/power on someone. You Burden them, which they gain/track, making your composure better as you do so; they can then spend that Burden to guilt you into doing things for them
Okay this has legs. You can spend Burden to increase their Burnout (long term health, opposed to Composure), offer them XP if they're vulnerable with you during a shift, make a check for them harder, or force them to spend their day off with you to help you recover better.

If you're like me and consider yourself completely ignorant of graphic design, this provides great insights into the process of how that evolves and improves, and having examples of every step is really helpful!
New post, a retrospective about the graphic design of my game Situations. Read it if you want to learn about how graphic design plays into the UX of a card game maybe or if you're just curious what fonts I used noa.land/situations-d...
My new essay is about games and temporary worlds - magic circles and how they're broken intentionally.
This post surveys a lot: Munchkin, Savage Worlds, Monty Python, In Dreaming Avalon, You Will Die In This Place, The Yellow Curtain. With special attention to a Dread scenario: Tully State Forest.
The second essay in my design series for Mousetrap is "Breaking Fourth walls and Magic Circles." It explores the stages and temporary worlds that we create in games and how/when we cross them. It pays special attention to a very clever Dread scenario by @ravensridgeco.bsky.social: Tully State Forest

Kinda wild that there have been wild protests going on in Albania for months set off by a corrupt Kushner luxury resort project and there has been barely coverage of it here πΊπΈ and Trump never gets asked about it.
I've switched tactics from calling "llms are sentient beings" nitwits stupid to agreeing with them and saying "yeah!! Furbies too!!!" and they get so much madder lmao
This can't have been an easy decision for House House to make, well done to them.
By chance, I read this news just as I was watching an interview with Humza Yousaf in which he speaks about the need for those with public profile, platform & security to use them for Palestine.
No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads
Finished the I/O interactive James Bond game (thanks The Library!), a great ride! Smack dab in the middle between systemic & immersive sim like the recent hitman games & narrative set pieces like Uncharted.
Personally I wish it was a bit more hitman, but that's most things; looking forward to more!
I really loved seeing the spreadsheet of words & process to whittling the game to its best, especially because the first thing Noa & I bonded over was how similar situations was to my first ever prototype; just because you CAN make a story out of any words doesn't mean a game should!
Prison Book Program now has enough storage space for as many RPG books as people want to donate. Or any of the other frequently requested books, but RPG books are often requested, rarely donated, and most of the people I know here are RPG folks. prisonbookprogram.org/donate-books/
Good news- I had an incredible time yesterday talking to other Philly designers, who inspired me to make a ton of progress on a game idea involving flashforwards, flashbacks, & unintended consequences of our decisions (with a first test likely at Metatopia π)
Bad news- I was so inspired that, well:
Shout out to @goosepoopgames.com for making the Philly RPG designer meetup happen in the first place which has become an important date on my calendar every month, and to Jackie (designer of @crucibleofaether.bsky.social ) for the incredible dinner conversation beforehand

The first interview in the Mousetrap design series is with @newmadras.bsky.social on Theatre and RPGs. Did you know Thomas is not only an accomplished journalist and RPG critic but also an award-winning playwright?
We finished the playtest campaign of @jenkatwrites.bsky.social 's "Before the Season Ends" today and it was both sad and wonderful.
The game is a true gem and I can't wait to see the finished version! It really gets at the core of female friendship, emotions, societal pressure, and more. π
We finished our campaign today, & now Emmeline joins the pantheon of PCs that I will forever carry with me. In a world where people feel alone & disconnected, BtSE made me feel connected to my friends, characters, & women of the past in way that we could use more of.
BtSE is a fantastic, beautiful, elegant game that everyone should play.
That's it, no qualifiers.
I've posted previously details and emotions, but if I want one takeaway for a reader, it's that.

Instead of getting strings when you turn someone on, perhaps you earn them when you escalate the situation, making it worse specifically for that person
The much lauded Strings mechanic pulls characters into unfair power dynamics & messy situations in a way that's flexible enough to respond to the narrative position & changes as they happen.
Homeroom does so much to create NPCs, encourage dynamics with them, & situate the PCs in school with ease.
Rush To Diagnose Children "Left Handed" Can Scar Them For Life, Worry Right Handed People
Fears mount a recent influx of kids written off as "Left Handed" can lock them out of using right handed scissors

TTRPG Newsletter question
If you subscribe to any TTRPG newsletters, what do you like to see most (in terms of frequency, length, content, etc)?
I have a monthly newsletter, and Iβd like to make it more engaging and useful to folks, so any thoughts or opinions would be gratefully received π

I still think about the conversation I had with an uber driver
Him: so what do you do
Me: Iβm a video game writer
Him: wait, video games? They have writing? What do you write?
Me: you know when you open up a game and you see the words?
Him: yeah?
Me: those
The funniest/saddest reaction to this amazing article has been people going "wait, Stellaris has WRITERS?"
Yes folks, if a game has words... someone probably got paid to write them... even if that game isn't an RPG or a visual novel...
