I used to think, if we could get everyone to see the *patterns* in reactionary lies & manipulations, the way they're always the same, we'd be better at guarding against them. But I've lost that faith. On some level people *want* to shut their frontal cortexes down & wallow in monkey-brain shit.

IMHO the taxonomy of right-wing beliefs is: 1) Dipshits who "don't like politics" meaning they don't think at all, just herd behavior 2) Dullards soaked in propaganda who believe they're thinking 3) Downright malicious people who just want to cause harm. Material grievances are tangential at best.

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social

a lot of people want to believe that right-wing beliefs are rooted in some legitimate material grievance. that makes it easier to imagine that if we simply solved the material problem, they’d deradicalize. but they won’t, because they aren’t disillusioned, they’re just morons.

Astra Taylor and I wrote this book together because facing the monsters alone is just too scary. When we face them with friends, however, we don’t just get scared–we get mad, we get motivated, and we get organized.

Nobody under the age of 31 has ever seen a presidential election ballot without Trump as the GOP nominee. A decade and counting in which the only people who became Republicans came into it knowing full well that's what it meant. No small part of why the second term is more extreme than the first.

A leaked Florida college group chat revealed TPUSA's chapter president — and other young Republican activist leaders — giddily using antisemitic, racist and fascist rhetoric. The heirs to Charlie Kirk’s legacy keep getting outed as bigots. And the right mostly just shrugs. (new @ms.now column)
