The Tufted ground squirrel (Rheithrosciurus macrotis) is a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in floof.
Let's start with the *FLOOF* & talk about why they're called "VAMPIRE SQUIRRELS" last.
They have the largest tail: body size ratio of any mammal on Earth: the tail is *130%* the size the body.

Moneris, the Canadian system used to process 5 billion of transactions annually for 325,000 points of sale, is being sold by the owners (RBC and BMO) to a US private equity firm.
I don't think this protects Canadian digital sovereignty. I signed a petition for Ottawa to intervene, and you can too.

Also - please join me if you will in flooding Bluesky with Canadian culture.
Music, art, film, TV.
Let’s show the vibrancy of this place I’m proud to call home.
The difference in utility between the use of ML to tackle big data problems that would otherwise be intractable & the use of LLMs to produce pointless slop is so large they cannot both be usefully described as “AI“.
The first is making real progress, the second is dragging us towards the abyss.
I‘m far from an AI doomer, but it is amazing how many serious voices — on LinkedIn, no less! — are sharing stories about how AI slop is quickly becoming one of the top problems they see in academic writing and research
“AI will 10x our research!” doesn’t seem to be surviving encounters with reality
Does your timeline need some peace and beauty plus humor and cool info? And absolutely no

(Apparently Bluesky will now notify accounts if they’re followed through a Starter Pack. So let’s test this out!)
If you click through and hit follow on this Starter Pack you’ll automatically follow a bunch of photographers who will fill your timeline with birds, bugs, flowers and more. #birds

I was wondering if things were stalled.
English Common Bird Names Pilot Project finally issued an update, its been over a year now I think? Short version is, still meeting, still doing things, but trying figure out how to not attract "unhelpful attention".

I do imagine that its hard to thread the needle on this one. It's an important project but once someone with a particular audience decides its part of a larger culture war it could lead to a lot of harm to the people & orgs that are trying to conserve & help birds.

Falcon Update 🚀
All four chicks - Vincent, Saltfleet, Dalewood, Corktown - have successfully fledged this year! Thank you to all the volunteers who watched over the chicks as they learned to fly and most importantly were able to respond when two needed a helping hand.
This was the first I've seen of a cowbird being fed by something its own size more or less!

Though I did once observe a juvenile cowbird hanging out with a family of Northern Flickers, foraging for ants. Never could figure out if maybe it was part of the family.
For #BirdOfTheDay, I actually don't have many birds perched on rocks I can show... How about a bird perched in front of the #Rocky Mountains! This singing Townsend's Warbler was done for the latest season of @songbirding.com , go have a listen.

"Watching the siskins among the sunflowers, I wondered about the birds’ decisions and movements. Why did they all fly up into the air at the same time, and how did they coordinate that movement as one cohesive group?" #ornithology
