one of the really useful takeaways from fukuyama's political order books is a clear conceptual understanding of what corruption *is* in its fundamental nature. and the answer... is patronage networks organized on personal connections! corruption is *inherent* in these discretionary systems!

looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation

Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Food is better, air conditioning is way better everywhere (my parents’ house had central air in the 90s but its nothing like more modern ones), everything is electric now and needs less maintenance, from drills to weed whackers to mowers, we got electric shovels that are mini blowers on sticks

I haven’t changed a lightbulb in my adult life! LEDs last forever! I haven’t gotten a genuine computer virus in years! Oil changes are way less frequent, the DMV is mostly online, wikipedia replaced physical encyclopedias, kindle is a library on my phone, and there’s more in every single industry.

The room is silent. I slowly place the chain of connection list on the table. “Do you like it?” I turn it around so they can see the names. “The degrees of separation are subtle. The chain is almost impossibly elegant. Notice the way the connections converge.” I pause. “It’s called networking.”

If anyone ever tells me my Aella number I’m going to stroll into traffic.

This is true and true in a way that "well it wasn't actually that broad a decision" misses. Trump v. US was, and has had the effect of, the Roberts Court's political endorsement of total executive lawlessness and corruption far beyond the four corners of any direct application to prosecuting Trump.

Cristian Farias@cristianfarias.com

The only thing I’ll add to this fine statement is that vindictive prosecutions are now a feature, not a bug, of our constitutional system, thanks to Trump v. United States. Unless and until Congress adopts deep, structural measures, presidential harassment through the criminal system won’t go away.
