New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility. w/ @grahamrayman.bsky.social & Joe Anuta www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

There is this constant argument that the right would not have gone fash if the shitlibs were nicer to them. Meanwhile MAGA has been telling me for a decade "fuck your feelings."

These guys found a niche ten years ago and can't quit it as history sweeps them by. It's a how do you do fellow kids type of thing.

How are you still writing this shit www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

Picked up two books. Just finished Amran's great finance crime satire. Bishop's Pawn will be the next novel to read.

#Bouchercon #booksky #readingcommunity #books Back from #Bouchercon will post on this in detail over the next few days. Was on Debut Author Breakfast and on a panel about Cold War & Espionage w/ Mark Greaney, Jonathan Payne & others. Had 300 people? BS'd w/ Jack Murphy who took a copy of my book.

On boomerbook you got senior citizens openly saying they want to kill fellow citizens in the streets. They don't like it when you ask them how they are going to do that when they struggle to check their mailbox at the end of the driveway.

No joke, this is one of the best reads I have done recently. Definitely worth the buy, as I am going to reread it after I clear a few others from my queue. Great job @jackmurphyrgr.bsky.social

Do not recognize pardons granted to unindicted individuals. Democrats must make it clear — well before inauguration of the next president — that Trump administration staff will be investigated and potentially prosecuted regardless.

Remarkable. I don't know how to explain what journalism is to two of the largest media outlets in America. Journalism is not repeating an obvious, comical lie, then tacking on who said it at the end.

Yes, the real danger isn't so much that the AI will choose the targets but rather that the humans responsible will wash their hands of it and say the black box told me to bomb there.

Liberal Currents@liberalcurrents.com

"The U.S. military over-relied on AI for targeting in Iran and as a result bombed an elementary school, killing over 100 children. We have disturbing testimony from Israeli military officers that AI target selection made them feel morally absolved when they killed civilians."

The detective unironically fighting for justice is an important, and even edgy, message to a society fixated on its own navel.

QuoProQuid@quoproquid.bsky.social

detective who hates that he has to be the postmodern, deconstructive detective who has to repeatedly remind the audience that detective tropes are corrosive instead of the guy who gets to drink scotch and smoke big cigars and pursue dames without examining how he fits in the larger social context

Damn

Jared Yates Sexton@jysexton.bsky.social

It really knocks you on your ass when you realize the problem is that the fascists are largely made up of a bunch of grown men in arrested development who spend their adult lives playing pretend and making everyone miserable as they LARP through the world.

Antisemitism is structurally necessary for Musk's politics, because the right-wing populism he supports needs to frame itself as fighting for "the people" against "the elites," but as the world's wealthiest person, he needs a definition of "elite" not rooted in actual wealth or corporate ownership.

Walker Bragman@walkerbragman.bsky.social

Elon Musk threatens Congress.

Man that one quote really preoccupies a lot of people. No one actually wants scotch swinging soldiers because they don't want to deal with the maintenance issues.

CIA releases new promo video: "It has been said that the CIA's World War II predecessor, the OSS, described its ideal recruit as, quote, 'A PhD who could win a bar fight.' This sentiment is the essence of what today's CIA must recapture."

New: We found cops who kept using Flock to spy on women after they left the force. One used it for five years after retirement, tracking his wife during a custody battle. Another ran searches while he was suspended (and later fired) after killing a 15-year-old boy. Free to read: wapo.st/3UEwWU7

wapo.stTheir police jobs ended. They kept using Flock’s vast surveillance network.Flock employees urged the company to adopt stronger security after a 2024 breach. The company continued to allow practices that left its network vulnerable to unauthorized users.

Defund ADL

Joel S.@joelhs.bsky.social

If Zohran Mamdani or Abdul El-Sayed had used the word “Shylock” as an insult, the ADL would be attacking them by name relentlessly. But Donald Trump used it, so we get a generic condemnation of the word without any specific reference to who actually used it, and with no assumption of intent.

I'm sort of interested in where this intersects with the "Jesus wants you to be rich" evangelicals. I've met a few of those and they are scary. No conscience whatsoever, can say anything to anyone, because JC and his boys want them and their family to be successful. Them glassed over eyes too.

It‘s kind of incredible that there’s vast amounts of replicable quantitative data that says being Evangelical makes you evil and despite its massive impact on politics we just… don’t talk about it all that much.

I came to realize that when people say they want "realism" in mil/spy thrillers they have no actual way to know what is or isn't realistic. When they say realistic, what they really mean is something that kinda reads like every other fictional work in the genre that they are familiar with.

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

One thing that is weird about current examples of the genre is this attention to ~tactical realism~ in like the exact guns or jargon used but the central motivating conflict is either ‘evil PMC that might as well be cobra commander’ or ‘mumble mumble hand wave’

Some of the comments I get are kind of funny, like some people can't believe that soldiers have a sense of humor and make fun of each other. Like they think the troops are all just stoic steely eyed six foot three (lady) killers.

The ADL as an organization gets the mute button from me ever since they said Elon doing a Nazi salute at the inauguration was not antisemitic. Useless opinions from a useless organization, ignored.

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Man, did anyone notable use this term recently? Perhaps in a prominent campaign speech echoing Holocaust-era Nazi rhetoric?

I had a renowned author contact me telling me how much he loved my book. After a few emails with him I realized I was talking to a AI that someone was training to write my own books.

alix e. harrow@alixeharrow.bsky.social

it took four hours and emails across three agencies to determine if a simple, polite email invitation was legitimate, in case you're wondering whether AI has improved efficiency in my field
