Look, I didn’t study history, but my feeling is that cyclops were not in fact “historically accurate.”

the beggars out of here getter@milesklee.bsky.social

In July, an incensed Elon Musk vowed that Grok Imagine would produce a "full-length" and "historically accurate" adaptation of Homer's Odyssey to put Christopher Nolan's woke version to shame. Three months later, we got seven minutes of slop that Grok itself admits is not historically accurate.

If anything comes of this, it may well be the most impactful policy of Carney's entire tenure as PM. Few things could be more transformative for the constitutional order than a new law to supplant the Indian Act as the basis for the relationship between the Canadian government and the First Nations.

Mark Carney on abolishing the Indian Act: "I'm committed to a process that moves Canada beyond the Indian Act."

Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

This will make Tariff Grandpa mad. Lol, lmao.

Brian Platt@brianplatt.bsky.social

Mark Carney, when asked just now what has changed in US trade talks over past week: "To the extent any progress has been made, it's because the US is coming closer to our position."

Oh dear, this is going to cause an explosion.

El-Sayed on Trump's cognitive tests: "I went to medical school...In my neurology unit, I would have to give that MoCA exam...The only people that you give a MoCA test to are people who you worry may have cognitive deficits. By definition, if you're taking one of those tests, something's wrong."

"We're getting rich!" "Now, Hogan argued, the election is about economics and foreign affairs, and Trump is making it worse by bragging about how rich he and his allies are getting while Americans hurt."

If you go down the alt-history route, you see this. Players turn Canada fascist, invade Cuba (!) to get on a war footing, then invade the US to get the “burn the White House again” Steam achievement. So yeah, the whole economic/political system is designed to allow a “historic WWII path.”

As a final note, “Golden Fetters” by Eichengreen covers the demise of the inter-war gold exchange standard. The TLDR: the faster you got off the Gold Standard, the better. However, that pre-dated the 1936 start date for many of the countries (I believe).

Although Bret states that only the US has the Great Depression malus, Canada has it also. The problem with “The Great Depression Malus” is that the answer is taking the “Get Off the Freaking Gold Standard and Enact Keynesian Policies” national focus. (OK, calling them Keynesian is an anachronism.)

Although Canada was not in the same economic league as the US, the Canadian government under Bennett crippled the economy in the 1930s, they only stopped the idiocy once the war started. If you allowed Canadian players to go on a war footing in 1936, the results would look “silly” by 1939.

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social comments on the economic model of Hearts of Iron 4 (HoI4). I have not played the game too extensively (did a France run, doing Canada now, plus “learning runs” that were restarted), but I agree he’s correct about the dubious economic logic. acoup.blog/2026/10/23/t...

acoup.blogTeaching Paradox: Hearts of Iron IV, Part IVa: The Fires of IndustryThis is the first half of the last part (I, II IIIa, IIIb) of our series looking at the vision of history advanced by Hearts of Iron IV, Paradox Interactive’s World War II grand strategy game…

I see HoI4 as basically a wargame, like Avalon Hill’s Third Reich, and less of an “everything strategic simulator” like EU5/Vic3. It sort-of makes sense for Allied countries if you follow the historical path. As such, I’m less concerned about the “meta choices.”

The fact that the economic system goes off the rails by 1943 is less of a concern since I had French/Allied armies fighting Germany on a continuous front line from Denmark to the Italian/Yugoslav border; the game was effectively over by then.
