Three months ago. Still fucking angry.

Stuart Capstick@stucap.bsky.social

So fucking angry right now that amid a record-breaking heatwave, the mood music coming from business and sections of UK politics is to exploit the last reserves of North Sea oil & gas. It's anti-science, damages global climate action and will only lead to yet more murderous, climate-wrecking CO2.

Stuart Capstick reposted

On the off chance that members of parliament still give a flying fuck about climate science and their international climate pledges. This should be an open and shut case to reject the application. www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/new...

Stop Rosebank@stopcambo.bsky.social

BREAKING🚨: @Equinor has resubmitted its application to open the biggest undeveloped oil field in the UK - Rosebank. In the next weeks, the UK gov will decide to reject or approve this disaster project. Equinor hasn’t given up, and neither will we. We’re stepping things up.

Approving the drilling of Jackdaw is the wrong decision on every front. It won't bring down bills, it creates barely any jobs, and it undermines our climate commitments.

It doesn't really matter whether you're a right-wing populist or a left-wing-cosplaying government, if you allow and enable more oil and gas then the effect on the climate, nature and the world's poorest is the same either way: crisis, destruction and death.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Approving the Jackdaw gas field solves none of our problems, while contributing to the existential crisis of climate breakdown. The government has privileged special interests above the general interest. It's a shameful, cowardly decision.

Stuart Capstick reposted

The IPCC is pretty clear that if we want a safe climate there can be no new oil and gas. But every country thinks it has some special reason for why it should be the exception

Today's decision by Labour to approve new drilling in the North Sea is climate vandalism. It's a betrayal of all of our futures, and Labour has abandoned all credibility in the fight against climate change. This is a victory for Shell over the people. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cw...

Government support for drilling at #Jackdaw takes a wrecking ball to any pretence of UK climate leadership & pours fuel on an overheating world - and for what? It’s equivalent to just 2 months of UK gas demand, creates just 27 direct jobs & has *no* impact on energy bills🧵1/4

Guess which protest led to arrests and which did not - the far-right balaclava-clad blackshirts blocking roads (September 5th) or Just Stop Oil sat in the road while leaving space free for emergency vehicles (September 2nd)?

Complete betrayal, climate vandalism, scientific ignorance. If you care about the lives of the world's most vulnerable people and the future of the planet, do not ever vote for this broken party again when there is now a viable alternative in the Greens. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The Earth will cross the 1.5 degrees warming limit that everyone agreed to in the Paris Accord. Thank all those politicians that delayed and weakened the vital climate policies, and still do. It’s not them who’ll pay the price, but you and your children. apnews.com/article/clim...

Pragmatic (adj.) 1. Of or relating to decision-making in the short-term interests of fossil fuel producers. 2. Neglect or ignorance of the risks of climate breakdown and need for rapid emissions reduction. 3. Naivety in regard to the promises or assumptions of unproven carbon capture technologies.

I don't want to have to engage in protest. I'd rather just get on with my research, and I found it quite emotional But while my government is considering pouring more fuel on the fires, despite everything we know and everything we're experiencing, what else am I supposed to do?

Remembering a Blackadder episode where, in the trenches about to go over the top, he reflects that "the real reason for the whole thing was that it was too much effort not to have a war". Many ways to look and climate and nature collapse, but to me this sorry explanation seems as good as any.

Post below from a month ago, since when a quarter of million people evacuated in France and Spain from wildfires, and it's still ~30C in London with little sign of rain. BBC radio news just now reports the deaths of 3 US soldiers and 9 Israeli citizens, as well as two oil tankers being hit. No mention at all of the 150 Iranian children killed by a US-Israeli strike on a primary school because why would anyone care about that.

Think I might go round my neighbours and take their stuff. No reason really, I just want it. I'm stronger than them so what are they going to do anyway? PS I really like the Bible and am a Christian.
