What happens when three objects enter the solar system from interstellar space? How would people react? After a few weeks (I've been quite bussy, sorry) I've finally finished spell-checking and aditing Last Time 'Round. Please check it out on #royalroad. #story #writing #writingcommunity #scifi

People often say math is hard. They're right, but that's only because *everything* is hard, once you look at it thoroughly enough #MathSky #SciSky

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 3974: Pacing matters. A fast pace of storytelling throughout may sound exciting, but sometimes leaves the reader behind. On a journey, you need to give your passengers time to view the scenery.

A prime example of why AI 'leaders' are not who anyone should be listening to about AI, right and consciousness. It's not all wrong! In fact, it starts off very sensibly: "AIs do not have rights, feelings, or consciousness. And we must not train them to act as though they do". But then...hoo boy 1/n

mustafa-suleyman.aiA warning about ‘model welfare’AIs are not conscious. They do not feel, experience, or suffer. Training a model to believe it might be a moral patient, as Anthropic’s constitution does, makes the alignment and containment challenge...

Just been such a revolution in my worldview to realise that people like Musk actually believe this, this isn't just the nonsense they feed the rubes so they can do coldly rational mercantile calculations in smokey rooms among themselves. No. It's rubes all the way down, they're that stupid.

i don't think we can come to a reasonable compromise with this

Hi! I’m Singularity. I do space art and illustrations! My art has been used in videos with a combined reach of over 700,000 views If you ever need artwork for an article, video, thumbnail, or anything else, ask me about commissioning! I’ve also got a Patreon and Ko-fi where you can support me! ⬇️

Maybe scientists struggling to get a grant should just emphasise how their research will lead to the end of humanity. That ought to work #SciSky #MathSky #AcademicSky

If "AI" were a mere tool and not a political narrative you wouldn't need to headline "X used AI to do Y" all the time. Anything anyone does while "AI" is involved must reify "AI"'s power and relevance. Because it's not "just a tool", it's a project of disenfranchisement some willingly embrace.

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

Also, if they really cared about disabled people, they could make glasses that do all the other stuff but don’t record anything. It wouldn’t be that hard to just not have a record feature. But non-consensual recording is the primary selling point, even if some people use them more appropriately.

I have had a very sudden change of heart regarding LLM-usage in mathematics and believe we should rally all these models to finding the smallest non-solvable group of odd order #MathSky

…so, I conclude (this is me now, not the quote) we should just not accept these as part of the record in the first place.

It's the job of the media to scrutinize such statements and decide whether there's a story here at all (maybe the story is Anthropic researchers have fallen into a fantasy-land and brought many policymakers with them), not to just platform them. >>

Time to break out the Babbage paraphrase. I am not able to rightly apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such an assumption.

OpenAI having to retract a few papers from their slop-deluge is honestly funny. Why didn’t they just only publish lean-verified papers? Honestly, discovering these mistakes almost makes it worth engaging with that monster 🧮

“Tendex Line” A Black Hole and its Neutron Star perform a violent, eccentric dance, spiralling closer and closer together. In its death throws, the Neutron Star unleashes violent starquakes and bursts of radiation, the frantic last gasps before it vanishes into the event horizon.

Ok, but seriously, openAI’s latest publicity stunt is honestly disgusting. Sure, it’s cool that we now know Thompson’s group is non-amenable, but like … I don’t want to learn that this way. I’m genuinely shocked there are still people (let alone mathematicians) working for LLM-companies #MathSky

Finally, animé par le sentiment de l’urgence, I wrote my own AI statement. Yes, it’s radical. Yes, it will probably make me even less popular among my colleagues, if anyone reads it at all. But I really believe we owe this to our students and our “junior” colleagues.

you don’t hold "AI" accountable; you hold AI developers, vendors, and corporations that profit off it accountable holding "AI accountable" is like holding a toaster accountable. it's an inanimate object. it doesn't have wishes, feelings, or desires

AI may be “good at math”, but will it ever experience the joy of being stuck on a commutative algebra exercise for an hour until you finally find the proof and realise it’s actually trivial? #MathSky

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

Pew tested AI synthetic surveys against actual survey data. Conclusion: “This experiment taught us that, at this time, AI models are not an adequate replacement for traditional polling on topics of broad public importance.” This is an all time bad idea. No need to hedge with “at this time.”

Knowledge is NOT politically neutral. The scientific method is a tool for deriving knowledge. So why then, are we telling the arbiters of the scientific method and developers of knowledge to be politically neutral? Are scientists supposed to forsake knowledge for politics sake?

Here I have a function that interested me today, so I wrote a program to plot it. The way it’s defined is it takes the sign expansion of a surreal number and feed it to a conditionally convergent series. For example, if your input is 1.5, that corresponds to (++-) -> 1/1 + 1/2 - 1/3.

Over on Twitter they are talking about solutions to the Fermi Paradox. Mine is that space is huge, we haven't been looking that long, and separating the hypothetical signatures of alien civilizations from random radio noise is significantly harder than most people think.
