The time to determine whether Dan J. Sullivan Jr. could appear on the Alaska ballot for U.S. Senate was months ago, and Alaska courts did so. What's additionally batshit about this is that the candidates' names are printed on the ballot in a way which makes abundantly clear who's who.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

Breaking news: The Justice Department has moved to preemptively block certification of the results of Alaska’s Senate race if Republican incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan loses his tight race against Democrat Mary Peltola next month.

2026 Turnout is nearly identical to this time in 2022. Dem (+1.1%) & GOP (+0.7%) TO is up slightly. Independent TO is down 0.6% The big shift is there are more GOP returns (+20k) and more Indy returns (+6.5k). If I have the time, I'll do some Friday vote history posting.

"New" implies this is a "new" iteration of a place in a different area. Carthago Nova = Carthage, but in Spain. New Hampshire = Hampshire, but in America. New Mexico = Valley of Mexico, but up north. Having one constituent state named New America doesn't follow that pattern and is nonsenscial.

I just………….

Thomas Mann said that Hitler's ideology was a low rent "younger brother" version of the social-Darwinist, Nietzschean, rational/civilization struggle ideology of right-wing elites of the early 20th century. And, couldn't you say the same basic thing vis-a-vis Trump and JD Vance/Pete Thiel et al?

I think you see with Trump a very Hitlerian, social-Darwinist hatred of Christianity and enlightenment values as weakness. Nobody would argue with JD Vance/Peter Thiel being Nazi-esque. I think it's a very similar dynamic and ideological landscape.

The US and the West welcomed Russia into the community of nations after the Cold War. Investment poured in. The G7 turned into G8. The idea that Poland, Estonia, etc. forming their own foreign relations was so unfair to Moscow that Russia is entitled to murder Ukrainians 20 years later is insane.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Ron Johnson blames US for Putin invading Ukraine: "The way we treated Russia after we won the Cold War, how we pushed them. I'm not defending Putin, but we said we were not gonna move NATO one inch to the east. We brought it right to their doorstep basically. What did we think Putin was gonna do?"

This year, federal agents terrorized our streets, killed our neighbors, and detained our children. Minnesotans were changed forever. Michele Tafoya thinks ICE treats kids “really well.” I think ICE should be ripped apart and replaced by a system grounded in dignity and due process.

Looks like the $3 million + that James Dolan raised for pro-surveillance gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman wasn't enough. Dolan is holding a $10K/head fundraiser for him at MSG, per the @nypost.com. At a Knicks pre-season game.

This doesn't make any sense at all and smacks of the government trying to make an example of scapegoat lawmakers with bogus charges as a midterm election political strategy.

Why would a physical search of Omar’s home in 2026 be relevant to or necessary for an investigation into whether her dad filled out a form incorrectly decades ago?

The evil worldview of the tech-Nazi cabal of Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, etc. If you're a visionary elite CEO, you're a demi-God. If you're a white, Christian, rosy cheeked American, you're a noble savage to be protected. If you're a Jew, a black, an Asian, or an immigrant, you're vermin.

JD Vance on H-1B recipients: "It's one thing if you were to bring in a person like Elon Musk. I think 99% of American citizens look at somebody like Elon Musk and say, 'if that person wants to come in and build something great in the US, we support that.' But if you're bringing in an accountant... "

Seems like if you're going to make a national story out of Hasan Piker, who campaigned a few times with the Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, saying Israel causes antisemitism, you should also make a national story out of the favorite intellectual of the US Vice President supporting Hitler.

Lora Kolodny@lorak.bsky.social

meanwhile on Xitter...

I was thinking about this and here's the insight. If you take polls seriously, Democrats are poll above generic ballot baseline in Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, and Texas, and below in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Median age ME: 44.8 NH: 43.3 VT: 43.1 KS: 37.4 ID: 37.3 AK: 35.8 TX: 35.6

Daniel Drezner@dandrezner.bsky.social

So… those NYT/Siena polling numbers for Alaska are nuts, right?

And I think the bearish hypothesis for Democrats is that there's a massive polling error specifically among younger voters that's propping them up. And, the more bullish hypothesis is that young people are more impacted by inflation and that's persuading people/impacting turnout differentials.

Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
