As ever, whenever I have done a complaining thread, I try to post something positive. This time, it's all about Umeå, a city in the N of Sweden which has made incredible strides in terms of safety for women and girls. In the last thread, I posted their co-designed space for teenage girls.

sorry to ruin your fun but his whole stoner nice guy routine is an act. Scooby's not even his real name, it's Gideon, and the only reason he can doss about in a mystery van is because his family, the D'Oubay-Doux, made a fortune in the East India Company in the 1700s. educate yourself.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you’re under absolutely no obligation to justify yourself to anyone if you choose to spend the entire weekend reading a good book, making multiple cups of tea, and indulging in a scandalous amount of cinnamon rolls.

Hello! It doesn’t cost anything to repost but it helps me spread the word about my small business. My online shop is full of bold & colourful prints, homewares and cards. I’m also available for freelance design work and art licensing. gailmyerscough.co.uk

These are the very people who make women and girls feel less safe.

Ireland against Fascism@irlagainstfascism.bsky.social

Danny Tommo's 'patriot platform' vigilantes were refused service in The George Inn, Portsmouth. They demanded to know why, despite the fact they do not have to be given a reason. Always make bigots feel unwelcome. Show the pub some love for doing the right thing. Things you love to see ✊❤️

This is quite extraordinary. I don't think I have heard a more coherent, articulate and accurate deconstruction & demolition of Nigel Farage's ReformUK, Tory & Restore policy than this. In under 85 seconds! @rafaelbehr.bsky.social is on here folks and worth a follow.

Every single one of them professionally furious. Just look at those faces.

First time attending Surbiton Ski Sunday, where people strap blocks of ice to their feet and compete to ski down a soaped street. I love this country.

Amazing story

On 8th Oct 1952 the worst civilian rail disaster in UK history happened in London. 112 deaths. 340 wounded. That accident, and the actions of one woman from Florida have saved THOUSANDS of lives since. That disaster helped lead to the creation of paramedics. /1 🧵 www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU60...

Despite the picture, this is a development which will not necessarily benefit women. Research and engagement is clear that greenways do not feel socially safe for many women, particularly after dark, and they would prefer to cycle near a road.

Oxford Clarion@oxfordclarion.bsky.social

Plans have been unveiled for a network of cycle routes linking nearby towns and villages to Oxford, backed by county and city councils – and unusually, the University of Oxford. The Oxford Greenways would connect 200,000 residents to the city on traffic-free paths. oxfordclarion.uk/oxford-green...

Rape is four times more likely to cause PTSD than combat. Where is the help for heroes for women who have been attacked - oh, instead we have idiots on social media trying to doxx and discredit them.

Princess Vimentin PhD | Cancer Biologist@princess-vimentin.bsky.social

Apparently people are trying to doxx Cornell’s Jane Doe. I have never felt so concerned about a Jane Doe in my entire life. I am shaken. It is so incredibly difficult for women to pursue justice. Sexual assault causes higher PTSD rates than war. This excerpt is by Rebecca Solnit.

I’m totally with you. Glossy gorgeousness. Years ago I came across a group of teens in the woods opposite my house. “I bet they’re up to no good” said the man who went on to bother them.* They were actually playing “Conkers Got Talent” which involved judging the deliciousness of various conkers

Safety alone isn't enough to get more women cycling. Cities must start building cohesive networks connecting the myriad places women need to go. This means looking beyond “Can women cycle safely here?” and asking: “Can women use this network to live their lives?” LISTEN: www.dw.com/en/why-arent...

Absolutely brilliant to hear Yvette Cooper call violence against women and girls an “epidemic” and for it to be formally treated as a “public health” crisis. Alongside the roll out of Steps to Safety to GPs this represents a clear commitment to tackling VAWG.

patriarchy is humanity's oldest protection racket patriarchs: you should give up most of your power and freedom to us because the world is big and scary and dangerous and we will protect you from the danger also patriarchs: *are the danger*

And this is for everyone. We all walk, and when we make places better for women and girls, they are safer, more inclusive, more diverse and more welcoming for everyone. (And it boosts local economies as well.) So what's not to like...

Gather round, children. In the year 2022 the Old Empire fell. A mad emperor seized the throne, renamed the realm after a single letter, and made his horse a verified account. The legions fled west across the sea, to a land of blue butterflies.

Dear Bluesky Elders, Tell us stories of the days when Bluesky was fun.

As ever, the simplest solution would be for them to all stay at home and leave the space to women who don’t want protection but freedom.

For several years I wrote a lot about vintage posters and to my surprise some bits of this have worn quite well. The original piece about losing the North to England is interesting in our new times… link below.

A lot of this comes via @susannahwalker.bsky.social's brilliant Quad Royal blog where I got to mither in the comments about Industrial North England vs Deep England and she found posters to make clear this understanding of England was actually always there: vintageposterblog.com/2013/01/24/n...

Harry Pearson's "The Far Corner" (which is a far better book about football than "Fever Pitch" and a very good book about the northeast) has a little vignette where he talks about how Deep England has very little in common with his lived experience until he goes to Sonning-on-Thames and sees it.

we will now cross to David talking to Tom discussing what Anthony said to Tony about male violence… great. Males dominating every fucking corner of the public sphere including conversations about male violence will definitely work this time.
