To me, the lesson of De Blasio and the NYPD is different: they will hate you no matter what. NYPD, especially the white well-connected officers who make up the upper ranks, get their news from conservative propaganda and will not respect your authority or cooperate with you no matter what you do.

NYC’s Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani must deliver tangible policy change and be prepared to navigate a hostile press if he hopes to learn from his predecessor Bill de Blasio. From Kiren Gopal: https://trib.al/3isS87n

this speaks a bit to my argument about leaving twitter. it's not about ideological purity, it is about the fact that it's been turned into a political weapon for people who wish to use it to harm others. it's not the marketplace of ideas - you do not have to participate in this project! very simple!

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

It is genuinely unsafe for average people to use Twitter and speak freely. It appears to be this administration's primary intelligence gathering operation.

there are so many thoroughly antisocial behaviors that would shock and disturb you coming from any other human being but are completely standard for cops

completely correct. all of the complaints about cities & public transit being dirty boil down to what we prioritize in our city budgets: police. Can you imagine how much better it would be if we paid custodians police officer wages to keep our shared public spaces clean?

Before 9/11, the Canadian media diet was significantly more Canadian, tbqh, and then it became gauche to make fun of Americans. But given the benefit of hindsight, I think we can definitively agree that Red Green was superior to Tim Allen in every conceivable way.

To the people who think racist authoritarians should be posting more on Bluesky: What the actual fuck is wrong with you, fuck off with that mealy-mouth "both sides" bullshit, thank you for your attention, now go fuck yourselves

While you will not read this anywhere in mainstream media, because editors are a mix of cowards and ignorants, this is the most important driver of generalized misery in society. And neither Liberal nor Conservative will do anything to stop it.

The GDP is the pervert’s metric.

Sometimes, because it was the way to survive or just get along, you joined them in the betrayal of yourself, your reality, and what you knew. This is not a reason to be angry with yourself or ashamed of that choice. It’s a reason to start unraveling it, and rejecting it, today. Like right now.

THE RISE OF END TIMES FASCISM My first major piece of the new Trump era, co-written with @astra.bsky.social. The governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous, supremacist survivalism. Our task is to build a movement strong enough to stop them. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

all protest is performance. street turnout without using that energy to push you into effecting material change, however you can no matter how tiny it is, is just a parade. being responsive to calls for help is good to do. better to stay alert and keep showing up, especially when the trend fades.

the entire political project of the american right is to create a hierarchy with protected in-groups and punished out-groups. there is no moral nor political upside in meeting them half way on any of those out-groups. the only people in a bubble are those who deny that hierarchy is their agenda

In so far as it's a sign, it's a sign that elite academics enjoy mobility that 99% of their colleagues do not, given the absurdities of the academic labor market. If you wanted the "direst sign of bad things to come," that was probably when Mahmoud Khalil got detained.

RED MEAT from the secret files@maxcannon.bsky.social

I just found out today that both Jason Stanley and Timothy Snyder have left Yale to move to Canada. If you know who they are, then you know it’s likely the direst sign of bad things to come.
