Update on this, cansim users should update to the latest version (v0.5.0). The issue with StatCan mixing "non-breaking white space" characters into dimension and member names persists and is getting worse. ⚠️People downloading data directly or using other tools should take note and exercise caution.

One visible change is that it now warns about and fixes special characters like non-breaking whitespace U+00A0 in title, dimension, and member names. The characters make data unreachable from R. The warnings will automatically stop as StatCan implements fixes to upstream data. Read more here:
