Virginia's state policymakers boosted funding for free clinics some, but the state needs to do a lot more to protect us from the Trump admin's attacks on healthcare access
Effective today, legally residing immigrants with humanitarian statuses โ including refugees, people granted asylum, victims of trafficking, and others โ who were previously eligible for Medicaid will now be unable to access publicly-funded coverage.
Getting my job back at the Washington Post would not have been possible if it wasnโt for me belonging to a union.
@postguild.bsky.social and @wbng.org are the unions I belong to. I was able to challenge my wrongful termination because of the collective bargaining agreement / union contract!

Health care was always abt bodily autonomy the same as abortion.
And at core, this is abt forced compliance + control for everyone. Anyone who thinks they're exempt is deluded. Even the boys with their T shots.
I would *love* for this to become a top search result for trans "social contagion" & "grooming" โย please watch it tonight (while it's still newly released) to help convince the YouTube algorithm to make this happen!
BRAND NEW VIDEO: not only my most thorough take-down of these anti-trans talking points, but it explains why women & minority groups are often stereotyped as "contagious" & "excessively sexual." it compiles a decade of my work, so please watch & "like" & share so others see it! youtu.be/rJq9ran4Sdc
Very helpful explainer thread on the revised public charge rules that are intended to scare immigrant families away from accessing help during tough times. Yes, it will face legal challenge and, yes, even if those challenges are successful it will do harm to our communities.
This cruel new policy is certain to face legal challenges as it extends discretion well beyond the public charge statute. In the meantime, it will result in more of our neighbors being unable to afford food, health care, housing and other basic necessities.

Absolutely. The point of my thread isn't that I have it so bad, it's that this is the best trans people can have it, because we've lost basic rights and protections.
Had a really nice walk in Portland, OR today, along the Waterfront Park Trail, ending with a walk across the very cool Steel Bridge. Enjoyed this graffiti we came across, not unlike some you might find in RVA.
For the record, I don't advocate violence if it can be avoided, but I also think sometimes self defense is necessary when people are put into impossible situations.

RVA lost two LGBT public historians in the last few days (Beth Marshak and Judd Proctor), on top of losing Bill Martin in December. All three were so genuinely kind and interested in people. It seemed to me that they loved history because they loved people, in our our uniqueness and possibility.
Thanks for sharing this! Also, in case it's helpful to anyone else, a few weeks ago I finally found a city bike route map that includes the new Hopkins Road and Belt Blvd lanes (which aren't on that regional map). I filtered out the sharrows: richmond-geo-hub-cor.hub.arcgis.com/datasets/cor...
January 2020 has become my benchmark - there were already signs of the GOP pivot to anti-trans politics as their top issue, but no legislation had been passed in any state.
If you think trans people had too many rights six years ago, there's no common ground on which we can meet.
the trans agenda is literally just trans people asking to keep the rights trans people had without much issue until a few years ago, when Republicans started trying to take them away and a frightening amount of Democrats decided some of that was reasonable
Spotted 14 blue herons today as I walked across RVA's Mayo (14th St) Bridge! One day last week, I saw at least 25!! Plus maybe 15 or 20 vultures, 1st time seeing them back here in several years. They were all too far to get a good pic, sadly. Makes me want to walk to work more often!
The New York Times writes far more stories about the trans community than any other US print outlet, and is the least likely to quote a trans person when it does.
Seems bad?
Is the New York Times more biased than other major US news organizations that cover the trans community?
Early data from our 2026 news tracker suggests they are. Of the 10 outlets we've been tracking, NYT had the fewest stories that quoted a trans person of them all.

For transgender, nonbinary, or intersex Friends, the journey toward truth has often required courage in the face of misunderstanding, silence, and sometimes violence. But it has also revealed the presence of Spirit in the most intimate and transformative ways.
Really excellent piece by @willofwands.bsky.social in this week's QueerAF newsletter. I'd also encourage transmasc people, if they have the spoons for it and are in a reasonably safe situation, to use their privilege, speak up & be visible for those who can't.
Virginia's Senate budget invests $577M more in public schools โ funded by making data centers pay their fair share. That means real raises for teachers, more support for students facing the highest barriers, and money for school construction. https://bit.ly/4v6rfvz

I worked at the Washington Post for 11 years. The amount of racist hate I would get in story comments and emails was astounding.
I don't remember anyone telling me to leave the Washington Post because of racist comments and toxicity.
What many ostensibly thoughtful white people on Bluesky don't seem to understand: not having a more representative number of Black & other people of color here isn't ONLY about doing right by those groups/people. It's also the #1 reason this site just isn't as GOOD as Twitter wasโfor all of us.

Despite 20,000 sick Palestinians waiting to leave Gaza for medical treatment, only around 50 will be permitted to leave each day. No aid will be allowed through to Gaza. No foreign journalists will be allowed in either.
@juliaserano.bsky.social provides an excellent rebuttal to the idea that Dems need to triangulate against trans people in order to win moderate votes. (Calling Pete Buttigieg and Gavin Newsom). Lots of receipts for her argument.
very excited to have my response included in the latest Boston Review forum against Democratic moderation! here it is, my best argument for why Dems shouldn't "moderate" on transgender rights & LGBTQ issues more generally (as they are inextricably linked): www.bostonreview.net/forum/how-no...
The fed admin is turning plowshares into swords (so they can terrorize us & our neighbors) then pretending not to notice when people can't afford food. But in Hanover and around the country, people are saying it's too much. Thank you to everyone who organized & showed up to make this step happen
โPssh, Iโm from up north! I can drive in snow! Iโll be fine!โ
A lot of us who drive can drive fine in snow. The problem is itโs 20 degrees and dropping, which means itโs going to freeze all sorts of fast, and you donโt want your tires to find that out the hard way.
This is a major storm. Be smart.
Snow began last hour here in RVA. (I got in early after spending 12 hours back home in Manassas Park last night/this morning.)
Anyone on the road needs to wrap it up and call it a night.
Our roads need to be clear ASAP for first-responders, road treatment crews, plows and utility repair crews.
Because brave Minnesotans are staying in the streets in subzero temps and filming everything, we know this is happening. Of course it's not the first time our govt has murdered people in the streets. But it's outrageous every time, we have video, & the deportation machine is fundamentally wrong (1/2
Watch the video. This looks like a fucking execution by armed thugs - this is not what our country stands for.
Local law enforcement needs to immediately investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
There must be massive nationwide resistance to this lawlessness.
Every single thing you're seeing from Minneapolis is as impressive as it looks. It is that brutally cold out. That is a stonking huge number of people. Those utterly filled city blocks are that outrageously Midwesternly wide and broad. Getting everyone there did push Metro Transit to the limit.

Some advice from someone who grew up in Baltimore where this happens more: If this pans out as a snow-then-sleet/ice storm, I suggest not shoveling until after the sleet/ice is finished. A layer of snow under the ice makes ice removal easier.
And, yes, prepare for an extended power outage.
Thursday morning RVA weather brief.
Growing concern for Saturday night snow turning to ice early Sunday morning and continuing most of the day.
This would weigh down power lines and trees reminiscent of the Christmas Ice Storm of 1998.
Do not sleep on this system.
Update late today.
