We found that cells survive a proteostasis defect, but not the lipid imbalance it causes. Rer1 & the Dsc complex triage orphan membrane proteins at the Golgi. Lose both & DAG-rich multilamellar compartments (DMCs) form. Drain DAG & cellular architecture recovers. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Paper now out in Nat Comm by the Gatsogiannis group (wit us): Fantastic cryoEM structure of #VCP/p97-Ufd1-Npl4 with FAF1 showing how the accessory adapter coordinates Ufd1-UT3 to feed #ubiquitin into p97. Plus incredibly detailed dynamics of the complex. Thx for a great collaboration.

Guys! @jbahler.bsky.social and I are recruiting a PhD student in this round - if you know great undergrads or Masters students please tell them about us! And Crick in general, of course ;) Thank you!!

PhD recruitment is now open at the Crick, and we're looking for people to join a community of researchers tackling big scientific questions in the heart of London. Apply by 3 November: www.crick.ac.uk/careers-and-... Find out more about the three routes into our 2027 PhD programme in this thread ⬇️

Our study on DFCP1 and lysosome membrane repair is live! We uncover a previously unrecognized role for omegasomes in the cellular response to lysosomal membrane damage, revealing another layer of regulation in how damaged lysosomes are repaired. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Very happy to see this #MechanoGolgi story out (and in full open access, thanks to @upf.edu). Thanks a lot to everyone who contributed and helped make this possible, and, hopefully, more to come! rupress.org/jcb/article/...

💡New Preprint! How does a cell control which way a membrane bends? ESCRT-III has the remarkable ability to reshape membranes and drive reverse-topology fission, yet a fundamental question has remained: what determines the direction of membrane remodeling? www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

biorxiv.orgDirection of ESCRT-III-dependent membrane bending emerges from bilayer asymmetryIn cells, ESCRT-III is unique in mediating fission of membrane necks from inside, a process called reverse-topology fission. Yet, in vitro, the complex primarily assembles outside membrane necks and m...

Wu and Hegde annotate and analyze the topology of 4,863 human endoplasmic reticulum–inserted membrane proteins and their 20,546 transmembrane domains, showing that transmembrane domains inserted by different pathways can tolerate different biophysical properties. rupress.org/jcb/article/...

We offer a PostDoc position for a fully funded project on lipid-encoded #lipidtime protein quality-control checkpoints at the Golgi: great collaborators, excellent working & living conditions & benchspace with a view ;) Please share and repost!

Do we grow wiser as we age? I spent 15+ years chasing glam journals, wasting time and energy (and frustrating my team and co-authors). I don’t want to wake up at 70 and realize my life went into convincing a few editors my work was trendy enough. Enough. I’ll try to be smarter.

We have wondered what a complex archaeal cell might look like ever since 2014. It’s been a long road (and the journey is far from over), but it’s a good time to pause for breath and look. These Asgard archaeal cells are a surprise! And that is the joy of being a cell biologist.
