We found that cells survive a proteostasis defect, but not the lipid imbalance it causes. Rer1 & the Dsc complex triage orphan membrane proteins at the Golgi. Lose both & DAG-rich multilamellar compartments (DMCs) form. Drain DAG & cellular architecture recovers. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

In 2002, success rate at the ERC starting grant was 14%. This already felt too low to both panel and applicants, but was constrained by government funding. Well, 5 years later, it is now projected to be 5%. This is not sustainable.

Bravo @erc.europa.eu 🙄

Cripes. The ERC StG success rate is expected at around 5% this year: 373 grants for 7710 applications. Research strategies across the EU are shaped around securing ERC grants. But with such low odds, aligning national or institutional priorities with ERC objectives becomes a deeply flawed strategy.

This is a good week! On Monday, my PhD co-supervisor @deisseroth.bsky.social was awarded the @nobelprize.org for his work on optogenetics. Yesterday, I submitted my primary postdoc work on photopharmacology, a complementary method that uses light for the precise spatial and temporal release of drugs

Why does filling out a CV on an online portal have to be so tedious? In the end, people only look at the list of publications anyway. Surely there’s a more efficient way to do this! A little less form-filling would be very welcome.

#lipidtime: It's a lipid universe. Today in Nature we publish the Lipid Brain Atlas, the first map of membrane lipid composition across the entire mouse brain, a layer of organisation that cell-type and transcript maps had left out. #lipidomics #neuroscience #BrainAtlas

Really excited to talk about our recent work next week Thursday in Membrane Trafficking Virtual Community Seminar Series!

Ishier Raote@ishier.bsky.social

Membrane Trafficking Seminar Series 2026 fall season is here! An exciting programme: membrane traffic, organelle biogenesis, lipid transport, endomembrane evolution, we have it all! Save the dates and join us for fun science and discussions. Details at felixcampelo.wixsite.com/membranetraf...

If AI can solve the Navier–Stokes equations and predict protein structures, do you really expect me to believe it can’t find the accursed bicycles or traffic lights?

LLMs starting to solve long-standing problems! ChatGPT: P = NP Me: I think you're wrong ChatGPT: That's correct. I'm sorry. Thanks for pointing it out. P ≠ NP QED.

Did you know that the cells of old animals contain much less mRNA than the cells of young ones? Let me share with you some results from an ongoing project in the lab, where we are finding that a progressive depletion of total mRNA abundance is a crucial part of aging 1/22

Many thanks @jcb.org and @angelikahausser.bsky.social for highlighting our recent findings on how the Golgi responds to mechanical forces! As nicely pinpointed out, many (I think exciting and relevant) questions remain open, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this evolves in the next few years!

Spotlight: @felixmendu.bsky.social et al (rupress.org/jcb/article/...) show that the #Golgi responds to the mechanical force of cell spreading by increasing its secretory output, sustaining spreading thru a self-reinforcing feedback loop.
