I've been wondering how these turned out. The outcomes were not trumpeted as loudly as the program launches. And I haven't heard much about Social Impact Bonds lately at all.
Once the darling of policy wonks who aimed to apply free market-style approaches to public education, social impact bonds are taking up much less airtime these days. bit.ly/4AyK79p

I'm getting tired of the communal amnesia about the impact of policies. This report says that reducing criminal drug penalties likely resulted in 7,000 more homeless people in CA. But yanno where they would have been if arrested? Yeah, not getting treatment in jail. www.kpbs.org/news/politic...
I want to know this too. Presumably the state Medicaid plan ALREADY has this clinical information about the member, so why all the performative paperwork?
Will a Medicaid enrollee who suffers from seizures and addiction, and became homeless after losing his job, be able to navigate the process to prove he's too frail to work? That's the kind of question hanging over the implementation of a new Medicaid work requirement. @k-hought.bsky.social
When they announced DOGE I wondered how it was that the GAO with the same mission had become irrelevant. DOGE was a scam all the way down. More transparency my butt. When all is settled, it will turn out there were no true savings from the ignorant cuts.

With this administration, every time I see them use the word "empower" when it comes to a public program, my first response is to shudder and wonder how they have weakened it. Example: www.hhs.gov/press-room/a...
And what if the big gamble with children's lives doesn't work and all we get is a higher death and disability rate due to vaccine-preventable diseases and no change to the autisim identification rate? What then? This natural experiment brewing makes me uneasy.
"Science" from the White House. Trump reportedly wants to reduce the number of childhood vaccines and "hopes to then see autism rates drop" per @lizessleywhyte.bsky.social who also cites persistent whispers that Oz will replace RFK post-midterms #politics #healthpolicy #healthlaw #publichealth

This, from food safety attorney Bill Marler, is so much better than anything I've seen from the FDA.

Can anyone explain why these authors decided that the reason the US workers slowed down was b/c of Medicaid expansion? SNAP didn't change. TANF is still at 1990s levels. SSI is still hard to get. www.nber.org/papers/w35020

Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

I’m not sure why this isn’t being mentioned more, but: IRS policy for 50 years has been that the sitting president & VP get audited every year, in an effort to reassure the public they’re not corruptly abusing the office to enrich themselves.

Insurers are not directly the primary cause of health spending growth. But, with major insurers posting strong profits as health care costs grow, it’s reasonable to ask what value they provide for the overhead they consume.
Are insurance companies the cause of our health system’s problems? Yes, in part, but there is lots of blame to go around. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...
Yeah, shipping jobs overseas didn't do American workers any good at all.
In the 1990s, the working class of this country was told that unfettered free trade would create millions of new jobs and raise wages. As many of us understood then, that claim was a lie. Now they’re being sold the same false promises about AI.
Love these things!
"This is an ode to the toggle bolt, an elegant and inexpensive fix for wobbly towel bars, not-so-floating shelves, and any other fixture that needs to hold some weight on a hollow wall," our Wirecutter tester writes. "For less than $1 per bolt, I’ve purchased my freedom from wiggly wall mounts."
What if we all stopped consulting AI anything? What if what really mattered was human interaction?
People who find choosing wine to be stressful have been turning to A.I. At restaurants without a sommelier, one user said, it helps to prevent him from making a clueless choice. And at restaurants with wine experts, A.I. has given him useful talking points. nyti.ms/3Nyp2Z1
NO thanks. Full stop.
