The election of our discontent, final column. Hardest one to wrote. Had to rewrite it from scratch to get the argument clear. City elections are a catch-all for angst that isn’t directed to the place where change can actually happen. It’s a kind of dysfunction. I hope you’ll read & share it.

thestar.comShawn Micallef: Is it really the Toronto mayor’s fault? Why some voter angst may be misplacedThere is a peculiar dynamic at play in Canada and we’re seeing it play out in this municipal election, writes Shawn Micallef.

Heather McPherson nails it, again. Because supporting genocide is so important to the Feds that they won't follow Canadian law?

Heather McPherson MP@heathermcpherson.bsky.social

Why is this government allowing Israeli companies blacklisted for genocide to acquire Canadian companies - contrary to our own laws and policies? The government's response is what exactly?

Canadians can’t afford rent. Food bank use is at a record high. Wages are stagnant while the rich are getting richer than ever before. Of all the people who could use this kind of federal support right now, venture capitalists are at the bottom of that list. www.theglobeandmail.com/business/art...

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

I truly don’t believe there’s any meaningful coming back from this without destroying the current system. Wealth is too concentrated and psychopathy is incentivized monetarily. It goes beyond punishment, we need to alter how our societal reward structure functions and level the field.

no coming back from this without punishing the entire chain of command from the officers carrying out this shit to the people at the top giving the orders

This American group apparently flew to Halifax yesterday. I’m not sure why you would want to visit a place just to be shitty and disrespectful to the people who live there.

I truly believe that Universal Health Care, and having the Canada Health Act enforced is worth fighting for. I don't care about Danielle Smith having a conniption. Are we so weak that we're just going to lose our fight for climate justice and Universal Health Care because of Dani and the Seppos?

Each time I encounter a desert planet or ice planet with a breathable atmosphere in a sci-fi or fantasy, I’m reminded how little we have internalized the knowledge that Earth is only livable for us because of the organisms who share the world with us.

Yes, how dare Toronto and its residents have a say in something that directly affects *checks notes* Toronto and its residents

Debating the Cold War allows anticommunists to recite their favourite mantra indefinitely. Note: you might start hearing me use more of the language of Anton Jäger’s “hyperpolitics” going forward because as I get to know that analysis I find it pretty clarifying.

Liberal MPs have been playing playing passive, coy & cagey w their real island airport feelings, but they’re deeply implicated - even making concrete expansion plans! I go thru some of them in my @thestar.com column today & why they owe Torontonians some honest loyalty. They could stop it today.

thestar.comShawn Micallef: Toronto’s Liberal MPs have a duty to defend the city’s stake in the future of Billy Bishop airport. So why aren’t theyBilly Bishop is owned and operated by the Toronto Port Authority, a federally regulated agency, which gives Liberal MPs authority over any airport plans.

I think a lot of things are all simultaneously true right now: 1) we cannot confidently predict what will be effective 2) no one thing is going to be THE THING that makes all the difference 3) all of it matters in its own way Some fights are worth having, no matter the odds. Leave teeth marks.

Yes! The people defending this as trolling don’t understand what trolling is. “Libs will get offended by ANYTHING these days” only works if the thing you’re doing isn’t offensive!

i keep seeing the right argue that the nazi salutes are "trolling." i think there's some truth to that, but know what exactly is being mocked. they aren't mocking the idea that they could be nazis, they're mocking the idea that they should care one way or the other.
