What is an "unspoken threat"? The Blazers have nowhere better to go and zero offers on the table. Either the team is threatening to leave or it isn't.

Even the most uncomfortable vaccinations are nothing compared to the agony of the diseases they stave off. The worst I've ever felt after a jab was when I insisted - against doctor's orders - on getting the shingles, flu and covid jabs at the same time.

Arte Moreno bought the Angels in 2003 (the year after they won the Series) for $184 million. He then spent 23 years running them into the ground, let the stadium decay, wasted Trout and Ohtani, and sold for $4 billion. And the owners are crying poverty and threatening to kill baseball next year.

I think anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together would have immediately deduced the overlap between “Mr. Beast fan” and “person who reads books” was so small as to approach the Planck length, but now I’m legitimately thinking about reviewing this because I’m curious how bad it could be

The NFL doesn't have "markets," it has 30 TV studios. Two-thirds of revenue comes in through the national-TV deals; there is no local TV, and successful teams sell 600-650K tickets. There is absolutely nothing connecting the business models of the two leagues. It's apples and concussions.

When you are in the caucus room developing your proposals, there has to be a leader who says, "no, we're not going to propose that" because it's so outrageously unreasonable. But, Manfred and Halem aren't those leaders. They are the help. The proposals are being developed by 2nd generation

It’s just amazing how Peter Seitz ruled on the reserve clause more than 50 years ago, and multiple generations of owners still think about baseball players like a constipated Gussie Busch.

Brief rant: Yes it's cool that Brunson took less money so the Knicks could build a champion under the salary cap. But he shouldn't have *had* to. Salary caps are just tools billionaires use to suppress wages, and no one gets upset because the labor (pro athletes) make so much money. 1/5

If you take nothing else from this feed before you unfollow, take this: MLB and its team owners do not, never have, and never will give a single flying fuck about what the fans think. If they’re citing “the fans,” they’re just lying.

please, I beg to have to understand baseball trades in these terms, it seems like such a good time!

Garrett has several void years on his contract, which I excluded from the image. Those allow the Rams to spread out his salary cap hits beyond the actual terms of his contract, which gives them more flexibility to add players now. Teams don't mind void years because the salary cap keeps going up.

another point in why a cap/floor system is inherently anti-labor is that the cap/floor system gives owners more power/leverage that can lead to much more union busting. if owners are given a system that they can wield more power with, there will be attempts to ensure they get what they want.

David Molnar reposted

I will say this again and again until the cap fetishists get it. There is a 1:1 correlation between "leagues that have broken their unions" and "leagues with a payroll cap." Let that be a clue as to who wins in a cap system.

Often parties begin by taking positions in bargaining. Unanimous support for a salary cap is a position. It's not an interest. The more the clubs (that's what this multi-employer group likes to be called) talk about salary caps the slower the bargaining will go. 1/ www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/...

Craig naIls it. I wrote on r.s.b 30 years ago that ”competitive balance” is code for “the players make too much money.” Still true. Cannot underline enough that the owners don’t care about competitive balance. It’s just the line that most effectively cons the rubes.

"Le Chonk"@cdgoldstein.baseballprospectus.com

idk what to tell people anymore. the goal isn't competitive balance. It's franchise values. And they want a salary cap because capping spending makes their franchises worth more because it artificially restricts their costs. That's the entire thing. If they could do that without parity, they would
